Who are you?
  • There are total 60 spots in the class
  • 27 are already enrolled
  • Senior Junior Sophomore Freshmen
  • Transfer and art history students get preference
  • I am sorry if you dont make it, but the system
is designed to help those who need to graduate.

5
What is this class?
  • lectures and labs
  • The lectures are here Mondays and Wednesdays. The
labs are Fridays in room 295. (2rd floor end of
    the hall)
  • In the lectures we will talk about digital
culture and look at digital culture, in the labs
we will make digital culture, in both we will
argue about and discuss digital culture. Each
week there will be an assignment. These may
require some writing, web work, programming, or a
little of all three. Often the homework will be
posted to your homepage so you can view what each
other are working on. Some weeks will be harder
than others, but for the most part the load will
    be pretty light.

Shhh, this class is fun don't tell anyone.
6
For Example
  • Next week we will be talking about the Turing
Test and the class assignment will be to research
an online chatbot and write 200 words about it.

Dont
  • phones, texting, talking, iming, skyping,
    whatevering
  • I cant force you to pay attention, but dude.

9
TESTING
  • There will be a final, but no mid-term. The final
will be comprised of questions created by the
class. I suggest not worrying too much about this
test. We will not be looking for a lot of
memorization of names and dates, rather a more
general (deeper?) understanding of the topics
    covered throughout the term.

10
Reading
  • The reading load is light too. Most will be from
our textbook The NewMedia Reader, but for a
few I will give links to texts that you can read
online or download and print out. This book is
    available in the campus bookstore.
  • That said, when I give a reading I expect
    everyone to do it.

11
This is an art class
  • But perhaps not in the traditional sense that
you are used to. While this class will spend a
lot of time looking at the digital world in
general we will also be looking at a lot of
different artistic responses to that world. Art
is a great lens through which to look at any
culture, and cyberculture is no exception.

12
WARNING
  • Sometimes artists use challenging and
potentially offensive imagery to convey their
ideas. This is a good thing, but be forewarned
you might see stuff that offends you. We will try
to give you a heads up before this happens.

13
WARNING 2
  • The web is full of stuff that your mother never
told you about. We will not be dwelling on these
subjects too much, but they are a big part of the
intertubes so you may see something you wouldn't
otherwise look for. Be forewarned again.

14
(the last) WARNING
  • Some of your fellow students (and instructors)
may have views and ideals that you find
repugnant. This is a place of tolerance. Healthy
discussion is a good thing, but let's keep the
discussion a discussion and not an argument.
listening is as important as talking.

15
An Example
  • The election

16
Hardware
  • Owning your own computer (or having access to
one you can use) will make life a lot easier
while at Berkeley, not just this class. There are
computers in the room we use on Fridays, however,
AC23 students will not have access to those rooms
at other times. You will not be able to finish
all your work for the week on the Friday.

17
Software
  • We will not be learning any fancy expensive
software, in fact just the opposite. All the
software we use will be free and "open source"
except for Google and Facebook, which are just
free. Either a mac or PC is fine. We will be
doing some basic programming (don't panic) in
Processing, which is cross platform and free.

18
Guests
  • Lee Montgomery and Michael Trigilio from NPR
will be here to talk about pirate radio.
  • Darren Delaye and Braden Kowitz from Google to
talk about changing the name of the planet to
    "Google".

  • You can change your mac to Dvorak layout quite
easily. Go under the flag to open international
    and select Dvorak. Enjoy.

How we read it No pets allowed in the
store. You must wear shoes AND You must wear a
shirt OR you will not be served But how would a
computer see it?
27
How a computer might read it 1 No pets
allowed No shoes allowed No shirt allowed No
service allowed A clever computer with a large
database of English sayings may recognize the
bottom three lines.
28
But if the computer applied the logic from the
saying it would still get it wrong. You must
have a pet AND You must wear shoes AND You must
wear a shirt OR you will not be served
29
Even if somehow the computer was able to
recognize that the no pets line should be
separated from the rest of the sign, and it
correctly guessed the meaning, it would do so
MUCH slower than us human do it. The computer
wouldnt think it was funny, or found poetry, or
both (as I do).
