Title: The Gowra Scenario: Genealogy of Matthew vs Luke
1The Gowra ScenarioGenealogy of Matthew vs Luke
- Based upon the Aramaic scholarship of
- Paul Younan
-
- Andrew Gabriel Roth
2Genealogy Matthew vs. Luke
Most people think that Matthew's genealogy is
that of Yoseph (Joseph) because of the following
verse which seems to indicate soMatt 1 16 And
Ya'aqov brought forth Yoseph the husband of
Miryam, of whom was born Yeshua who is called
Messiah. The word used for husband in the Greek
here is aner (man), the same word used in Matt 1
19Matt 1 19 And Yoseph her husband, being
righteous, and not wishing to make a show of her,
had in mind to put her away secretly.
3The Problem
The problem lies in making sense of an
intervening verseMatt 1 17 So all the
generations from Avraham to Dawid were fourteen
generations, and from Dawid until the exile to
Bavel were fourteen generations, and from the
exile to Bavel until the Messiah were fourteen
generations.

14-14-13, not 14-14-14 as Matt 1 17 declares to
be true
5Gawra vsGura
6Gowra as Father
- .
- It obviously means father as verses such as
these from the PeshittaMatt 7 9 "Which of you
gowra, if his son asks for bread, will give him a
stone?"Matt 17 14 - 15 "When they came to the
crowd, a gowra approached Yeshua and kneeled
before him. 'Mar, have mercy on my son,' he
said.
7And Now for Something Completely Different
- . The context of 14-14-14 makes the probability
that gowra (father) is meant here and not gura
(husband) look reasonable. One other point. - In Matt 1 19 a completely different Aramaic
word is usedMatt 1 19 "Because Yosip her
baalah was a righteous man, and did not want to
expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to
divorce her quietly."
814 in the Third Set
- Now with this as Miriam's genealogy we get
1) She'al'ti'el2) Zerubbavel3) Avihud4)
Elyaqim5) Azor6) Tsadok7) Akim8) Elihud9)
Ele'zar10) Matthan11) Ya'akov12) Yoseph the
"gowra" of 13) Miriam, of whom was born14)
Yeshua the MessiahThus, if this genealogy in
Matt is from Miriam, then the one in Luke is from
Yoseph and not the reverse.
9Conclusion
- There are some good doctrinal conclusions
regarding succession that can be drawn from this
(such as Miriam's line goes thru the kingly line
of David and Solomon, and so by virgin birth so
does Messiah's)but I will let this stand for you
to look at or draw conclusions.
