Unit Summary
  • This is a two part project that examines the
background of Abraham Lincoln and allows the
students to understand how Lincoln lived his life
in comparison to way they live their lives. The
first part has the student research Lincolns
life on the internet and create a brochure
illustrating it using either the computer or
    making one from paper themselves.
  • For the second part of the project, each
student will pick a particular aspect of
Lincolns life and make a presentation for the
class. Some examples of possible presentations
could be, a group skit, a reading of the
Gettysburg Address with costume, an in depth
    explanation of Lincolns hat, etc.

related to their paragraph and paste it above
    their paragraphs.

the Civil War (Why it started, why it ended,

choose a particular aspect of Lincolns life and
make a presentation for the class. Examples
could include a group skit, a reading of the
Gettysburg Address in costume, an in depth
explanation of Lincolns hat with props, etc.

Time Requirements
  • Time Table
  • I would do this Unit around Presidents Day and
probably break it up into three weeks and work a
little bit on it each day leading up to the
presentations and the completion of the
    brochures.
  • Week 1
  • An introduction of Abraham Lincoln, I have a
Power Point to show that gives the basics of his
life. There are also numerous childrens books
on the subject that could be read out loud then
discussed. This is when you would talk about the
    presentations and brochures.
  • Week 2
  • Continuation of activities from Week 1, allow the
students time on the computer to work on their
brochures and answer any questions they might
have about either part of the activity.
  • Week 3
  • At the end of Week 3, the students will turn in
their brochures and make their presentations.
Allow 2 or 3 days for presentations since some
students might not be ready by the first day and
it allows for absences and such. This is an
excellent way to wrap up a unit about Lincoln and
    celebrate Presidents Day.

13
Prerequisite Skills
  • The student will need to know some basics about
researching on the internet as well as working
with productivity software to create a brochure.

14
Materials and Resources Needed
  • Computers for research
  • Paper, markers, crayons, map pencils, etc. for
the students who wish to draw their own
    brochures.

15
Web Resources
  • Nordic Software
  • This is a software program about Abraham Lincoln
that allows students to learn about his life and
how he kept the United States together. There
    are crossword and word-search puzzles,
dot-to-dots, matching games, coloring book pages,
picture jumbles and a presentation to help you
learn about Abraham Lincoln. The price is 14.95
and can be purchased from the following web
    address.

Web Resources
  • The Abraham Lincoln Research Site
  • This page provides many links to pages about
Abraham Lincoln and has one link especially for
students that provides a one page summary of
Abraham Lincolns life. This should be a very
reliable source for information and can be found
    at http//members.aol.com/RVSNorton/Lincoln2.html

17
Web Resources
  • This is a site developed by a first grade class
and offers many interactive activities for the
students to participate in. There is an online
quiz, an animation of the US, a picture gallery,
a treasure hunt on the internet, and even an
e-mail address that students can use to ask
Abraham Lincoln anything they would like. This
is a great page for students to visit and explore
    through.

Web Resources
  • This site, developed by the History Place, offers
a very detailed time line of Lincolns life and
all things relating to Lincoln. This would be a
good site to access for finding specifics about
Lincoln and introducing a unit on him. Along
with the timeline there are also photos that can
be enlarged for better viewing and utilizing such
    as in a Powerpoint presentation.

Web Resources
  • This is an informational site by the World
Almanac for Kids 2006. It is set up in a
timeline fashion but is better suited for
children than some of the other sites. There are
    also pictures on this site.

Accommodations for Differentiated Instruction
  • Students who work at a slower pace may be allowed
to just participate in the second part of the
activity or instead of a brochure format, allow
the student to just draw pictures and captions on
    a sheet of paper.
  • Gifted students really go all out on the second
part of the assignment while the other students
    can participate fully as well.
