Lets Talk
  • Whats your role?
  • Why did you choose this session?
  • What are you hoping to gain from this session?

3
Why Do We Screen?
  • Performance Standards
  • 1304.20(b)(1)
  • 1308.6 (b)(1)(2)(3)
  • To get a snapshot
  • Assist with developing curriculum
  • Other ideas?

4

Whats Screening?
  • The process of measuring infants and childrens
skills to answer the question Does this child
need to be referred for further testing?
  • Screening helps to identify those who may need
further assessment to determine whether they
exhibit a condition, such as developmental delay,
or are at-risk of being developmentally delayed
    in the future.

5
Differences Between Screening and
Evaluation/Assessment
  • Screening
  • is usually conducted as a collaborative effort
    between family and provider
  • is a quick snippet of the childs abilities
  • is often conducted to see if a child needs a
    further evaluation/assessment
  • a baseline for where to begin learning
  • Evaluation/Assessment
  • is usually conducted by a multidisciplinary team
  • a thorough analysis of the childs abilities
  • often conducted to determine if the child is
    eligible for early intervention services
  • is often on-going and used for planning

Small Group Activity
  • So your data tells you that a child should be
referred for further evaluation. How do you
    share this information with families?

10 min
9
Small Group Activity
  • Parents How did you feel when your partner was
    sharing information with you?
  • Providers How did you feel sharing information
with families.did you use your typical words
    today?

10
Sample 1
  • Terry there is no pass/fail. We would expect a
12mth old to be about this range. Because Tom is
behind, that is concerning. I would like to
refer to a different agency that can do further
    testing to help us.

11
Sample 2
  • Ginger, we have completed the screening on
Kelvin, and he is showing delays in his
development. The next step is that we need to
refer him to special education services.

12
Sample 3
  • Dawn Dale, do you have any concerns regarding
Daisys development? Daisy is doing well in
these areas.but here are some things we can
continue to work on. I do have some concerns and
would like to refer to another program that can
evaluate Daisy to rule out concerns.

13
Screening Results Should Not Involve Power
Struggles
14
Considerations For Sharing Screening Results With
Families
  • Explain terminology
  • Encourage parent questions
  • Allow parents time to consider information (might
    need to revisit)
  • Allow parents to express feelings
  • Ensure privacy
  • Provide full and honest information
  • Repeat the information, as necessary

15
Key Phrases
  • May qualify for services
  • With your permission we would like to refer to
see if there are supports that could assist us in
    meeting your childs educational needs
  • An evaluation will give us more information of
    your childs abilities
  • Families are the final decision makers
  • Screening is a Snapshot
