is it) - Case policy regarding Acceptable Use of
Computing and Information Technology Resources - Computer Inventory Form
- To be filled out and returned to us for our

and to the electrical power outlet at your desk - Attach the network cable at your desk to the
Ethernet connection on the back of the computer. - Connect your mouse to one of the USB ports on the
computer. - Open the computer. Lift the monitor by sliding
the switch on the front to the right. - Turn on the computer. The Power button is the
largest button above the keyboard.
5Log On to Your Laptopfor the First Time
- Once you see the Welcome to Windows box,
simultaneously press the Control-Alt-Delete keys
to Log on. - Since this is your first time logging into your
computer, you will have to type your Case
Network ID in as your user name. - In the future, you will only have to type your
password. - Make sure that Log on to is set to INS.CWRU.EDU
(Kerberos Realm) (all caps). It should already
be so. - For Password, enter your Case password. This is
the same password that you use to check your Case
email. Then press Enter or click on Ok. - If you get an error message that mentions a
roaming profile, just log out and try logging
in again (this is not unusual during your first
login).
6Windows Desktop
- The Windows Desktop is now available to you.
- If a window appears, announcing new Windows
updates, close the box you will deal with
updates and the like during the Self-Paced
Exercises.
7Symantec Endpoint Protection
- If a Symantec window pops up, just minimize it,
do not close it. - Case has a site license for Symantec Endpoint
Protection which is more than just antivirus
software. - Virus definition updates will be automatically
downloaded to your computer when they become
available anytime you are connected to the
Internet. - Do not disable or uninstall Symantec Endpoint
Protection. Its proper functioning on all
student computers is necessary not only for the
security of your personal computer, but for the
security of all CaseMED and University computers.
8Set up a Local Admin AccountIn the event that
you are away from Cleveland and have difficulty
accessing your computer (due to some event that
takes your computer off of our domain), a local
administrator account will grant you complete
control of your system in the event that you find
yourselves no longer on Active Directory.
- Right click on My Computer and select Manage.
- Select Local Users and Groups in the left pane.
- Double-click Users in the center pane.
Right-click on SOM-Student and select Set
Password. - Click Proceed to continue.
- Use your Case password here. Then enter it a
second time for confirmation. - Remember that if you change your Case password,
this SOM-Student password will not automatically
change to match it.
9Battery Best Practices
- The more resources you use (ex. audio output,
increased screen brightness, wireless, CD or DVD)
the faster the battery will discharge. - Batteries are rated for a life of approximately
300-500 charge cycles). - Batteries have a one year manufacturers
warranty. - We recommend that you buy a new battery at the
start of your second year.
10Battery Best Practices
- To optimize the life of your battery follow these
best practices - When you first receive your notebook computer,
ensure that the batteries are fully charged by
keeping them plugged in until the green battery
light goes out. - The green battery light is lit whenever the
battery is charging. - After fully charging, run the computer on battery
power only, to fully discharge it. - Play a DVD movie until the laptop shuts itself
down. - Perform this routine once per month.
- If you have multiple batteries, rotate them
occasionally.
11Hard Drive Best Practices
- Do not throw or drop your computer.
- When you want to move your computer and it is on,
close the lid and count to 10 before moving it,
or wait for the hard drive indicator light to go
out. - On a weekly basis, back up your data to an
external hard drive, CD, DVD or an online backup
service (discussed later). - Store important data in your My Documents folder.
12Spilled Liquids
- Dont pour liquids on your keyboard.
- Your notebook does not get thirsty!
- However, if you do spill something on, in, or
under the notebook, IMMEDIATELY turn it off, pull
out the battery and bring it to us (room E-318)
as soon as you can.
13Hair Dust
- Buildup of dust and hair in your computers heat
sink can cause it to run hotter than normal and
shorten its life. - Keep your notebook away from pet hair and
excessive dust. - Do not let your cat sleep on your computer, no
matter how cute that looks. - Feel free to bring your notebook in to E-318 for
cleaning.
14Student-Designed Portal Favorite Websites
- The homepage in both of your browsers have been
set to the student-designed portal. - Case MED students have created this portal to
contain the most commonly used items. - We have added many Favorites Bookmarks that we
think you will also find useful.
15Browsing the Web
- Many CaseMED resources require the use of
Internet Explorer to function properly. For this
reason you need to use Internet Explorer to
access all Case-hosted websites. - To access outside resources for both schoolwork
and fun, we recommend Firefox which is also
installed on your computer. - In most situations they are interchangeable, but
we cannot guarantee that Firefox will render all
Case web pages correctly.
16E-mail
- Case has partnered with Google to provide the
Case community with Google Apps. - This means that you can use the Gmail web
interface to manage your Case e-mail. - This is NOT the same as a regular Gmail account.
- Using Gmail for your Case e-mail will
- Provide an automatic backup of all of your
e-mail, handy should your hard drive die. - Provide access to your Case e-mail from any
computer.
17Activate Google Apps
- Launch Firefox.
- In the Bookmarks Toolbar, click the bookmark
labeled ACTIVATE Google Apps. - Log in with your Case credentials.
- You will be prompted if you want Firefox to
remember this password. That is up to you. - Of the three radio buttons you see, select Send
my Case e-mail to Google Apps. - You will have to set a Google Apps password.
Whatever you use, do not forget it! Write it
down because you will not need it often, but you
will need it to configure a client.
18Check your Gmail
- Delete the bookmark ACTIVATE Google Apps.
- Close your browser.
- Launch Firefox or IE, click the bookmark Case
Gmail. - You may have to re-enter your credentials. You
may allow your browser to remember your password
if you wish. - You are now looking at your Case e-mail through
the Gmail interface! You have 6 gigabytes of
storage. - Fear not if you do not like it, because you can
configure an e-mail client in the Self-Paced
Exercises.
19E-mail Best Practices
- Never put any personal information in an e-mail
message. - Social Security Number
- Birth Date
- Passwords
- Ignore and delete messages that ask you to send
personal information, like banks and Help Desk
messages. - E-mail is NOT secure and can be intercepted.
20Cases Wireless Network
- Case Western Reserve University has a campus-wide
Wifi network called CaseGuest that your machines
have been configured to connect to automatically. - Unplug your Ethernet cable from the back of the
computer. - Your notebooks have a switch on the left side
that controls power to the wireless adapter. If
it is not already turned on, turn it on now. - A pop up balloon may open after a few seconds
that says wireless network connection is now
connected or wireless networks have been
detected - If the latter, single-click the balloon, select
CaseGuest from the choices presented. Click
Connect and if necessary click Connect
Anyway. - To confirm a wireless connection, launch a
browser and see that it loads the homepage.
21CaseGuest and VPN
- CaseGuest is not a secure wifi network.
- Any passwords will be sent in clear text.
- We recommend using VPN (Virtual Private Network)
to make your activity over wireless secure. - To start your VPN client, click on the yellow
padlock icon in your Quicklaunch Toolbar (right
of the Start button). - Click the Connect button.
- Enter your credentials when prompted.
- Click Continue or press the Enter key when you
see the popup. - Youll know youre properly connected through VPN
when you see the locked yellow padlock in the
task tray (lower right).
22Printing Policies
- There are two printers in each student lab and
one in each lounges - There is a color printer in E-328.
- Students are charged 0.05 per printed side.
Color pages are 0.25 per page. - At the beginning of each year, students are given
a credit of 30.00 (600 pages). - If your balance reaches 0.00, you can deposit
more funds in your account by going to room E-406
and paying by check or cash. - To check your printing account balance, open your
browser. Under CaseMED there is a
bookmark/favorite called Papercut. Click that
and sign in and it will tell you your balance. - You will set up printers during the Self-Paced
Exercises.
23Backup Best Practices
- If you value the files that you put on your
laptop, then it is very important that you backup
your laptop on a regular basis. Hard drives are
not infallible and laptop hard drives are
especially vulnerable. - Ways to backup
- Backup to CD/DVD
- You have software on your laptop and optical
disks are very cheap. - Or see our technicians in room E-318.
- Backup to an external hard drive
- As of writing this, a 500 GB external drive costs
119 and usually comes with backup software. - Carbonite
- Case has made an arrangement with an outside
company - For 49.95/year Carbonite will automatically
backup your laptop whenever you are connected to
the Internet - http//carbonite.com/case/signup.aspx
24Backup
- Still other ways to Backup
- If you have another computer, like a desktop, you
can synchronize important folders with it using
software like Windows Live Foldershare. - https//www.foldershare.com/welcome.aspx
- Memory Keys are cheap and surprisingly spacious.
- Another online backup option is JungleDisk
- http//www.jungledisk.com/
25Windows Vista
- At this time we are not recommending Windows
Vista. There are issues with how it interacts
with the Case network resources that cause long
login times. - If you want Windows Vista, Business Edition
anyway, we do have a Vista image we can apply to
your computer. Make an appointment in E-318 if
you want Windows Vista on your computer.
26Obtaining Technical Support
- Any time your laptop breaks, you have problems
with software, or you are unable to access a
restricted web page, please see our technical
staff in room E-318 (right across from the 3rd
floor mailboxes). - Office hours
- Monday thru Friday 1230 to 430 between
classes - Other hours by appointment
- Staff
- Willie Shen Computer Specialist
- Paul Zawolowycz Computer Specialist
- For any other IT issues, please see David
Pilasky, Director in room E-406.
27AAMC Matriculating Student Questionnaire
- Please complete the AAMC Matriculating Student
Questionnaire. It is very important for future
students and for Case. - Start up Internet Explorer.
- On the address line, enter the following
http//www.aamc.org/data/msq/start.htm - Fill out the questionnaire which is estimated to
take between 25 and 30 minutes.
28Self-Paced Exercises
- Begin the Self-Paced Exercises. A paper copy is
provided. (These exercises are available online
if you lose your copy and for future reference) - http//casemed.case.edu/orientation
- Complete all self-paced exercises at your student
desk by Friday, July 18th. - Administrative Computing staff will be available
in the student labs or E-318 to answer questions.
- We will also stop by your labs in the afternoons,
next week. - The Self-Paced Exercises are very important.
Please complete them. They help ensure that all
students have at least a base level understanding
of their notebook computer, the Case network and
the Internet.
29And Three Final Notes
- All students MUST bring their laptops to the
Orientation activities on Thursday, July 10th. - There will be a session where second year
students teach you about the eCurriculum and
Small Group activities. - If you want to skip out of a really long, slow
moving line Thursday afternoon, go up to the
Student Lounge and get your picture taken after
you are done with the AAMC Questionnaire. - We are here to help you with technology issues.
If you have a problem PLEASE stop by and see us!!
