6
Case 1The Wayward Bull
7
Yearling Charlois bull would not stay in
pasture. So he was locked in corral.
8
Neighbor had bull that broke his leg, so fence
crawler was sold to neighbor in July.
9
The first owner of fence-crawler discovered he
had Trich in January, so he notified the buyer.
10
The buyer brought over fence-crawler and three
other bulls.
11
Fence-crawler tested negative, but one of the
other three tested positive.
12
Test of all bulls revealed 4 of 12
infected.Fence-crawler tested negative on 3
tests.
13
Take Home MessageFence-crawler was yearling
when infected and cleaned up between August and
January. If we had only tested fence-crawler,
the owner would have had a false sense of
security.
14
Case 2The Wayward Heifer
15
The wayward heifer liked to spend time at the
neighbors place.
16
The owners got her back in the fall after preg
test.
17
She crawled out and went back.
18
She was brought back again.
19
She went back again.
20
She was brought back again.
21
This time she crawled out and visited the bull
pasture for a month. Then was sold.
22
The result100 of bulls infected.Next year
preg rate 50
23
Take Home MessageIt is not only bulls
jumping the fence that pose a risk.
24
Case 3The Milk Cow
25
Client went from 3 open to 40 open in one
year. Trich was diagnosed.
26
Client sold all bulls and all opens.
27
Used yearling bulls the next year and had 7
open.
28
All yearling bulls were sold and a new bull
battery used This time with some older bulls
At the start of the breeding seasonThe client
tried to get a milk cow bred
29
The next preg test 30 open
30
Take home messageSell All opens
31
Case 4No Known Exposure
32
Client has good preg test, 5 open.We preg
tested in late September.
33
He tested bulls because one neighbor had Trich.
34
3 of 12 bulls were infected.
35
The kicker The bulls infected were from
different pastures 30 miles apart.
36
The bulls were infected by one cow that aborted
after an early preg test.
37
Most abortions occur between days 60 100.
This client had only one cow that didnt have a
calf in the spring.
38
Take home messageEven with no known exposure
there is still risk. Perhaps this cow got bred
through the fence, or neighbors bull got in,
bred her, got whipped, and went back. The
infected cow became pregnant so didnt spread
until after she aborted at which point she
becomes a Typhoid Mary.
39
Final Take Home MessageTesting bulls is the
only safe sure way of controlling Trich.
Relying on preg test results puts you a year
behind.
