  • sometimes called rhetorical or humanist
  • are concerned with meaning
  • assume the impossibility of separating the knower
    from the known
  • voluntaristic assume that behavior is often the
    product of conscious choice

  • see significant decisions as value-laden
  • interest in emancipation
