What is Epilepsy?
  • Epilepsy is a neurological condition that, from
time to time, produces brief disturbances
electrical functions of the brain. (Epilepsy
    Foundation))
  • These disturbances are seizures.
  • When seizures continue to occur for unknown
reasons or because of an underlying problem that
can not be corrected, the condition is known as
    epilepsy. (Epilepsy Foundation)

3
What causes epilepsy?
  • Head Injuries
  • Lack of Oxygen During Birth
  • Brain Tumors
  • Lead Poisoning
  • Hereditary

4
Type of Seizures
  • Tonic Clonic
  • Animal falls, looses consciousness, extends its
limbs rigidly. Paddling of limbs, chewing,
    dilated pupils, salivation, urination, and
    defecation. (Alyward)
  • Partial Seizure
  • Only occurs in one part of the body. Muscle
jerking, movement of one limb, facial twitches.
    (Alyward)
  • Petit Mal
  • Brief duration of unconsciousness, loss of muscle
tone, blank stare, possibly upwards rotation in
    eyes. (Alyward)
  • Very rare in animals.
  • Cluster Seizures
  • Many seizures in a short amount of time. The
animal is only conscious a short times between
    seizures.
