Health in Global Perspective
  • Health is a state of complete physical, mental,
    and social well- being.
  • In Global Health HIV/AIDS was a top killer and
    double between 1990-2000. It cut life expectancy
    in a lot of countries in Africa and it raised the
    infant mortality rate.
  • Health in global perspective is studying health
    and healthcare issues around the world which
    offers insights on illness and how political and
    economic forces shape health care in nation.

Health in the United States
  • Social Epidemiology is the study of the causes
    and distribution of health, disease, and
    impairment throughout a population.
  • Rates of illness and death are highest among
    Americans 65 and older. Rates of chronic diseases
    increase rapidly.
  • Chronic diseases are illnesses that are long term
    or lifelong and that develop gradually or are
    present from birth.
  • There is also Acute diseases are illnesses that
    strike suddenly and cause dramatic incapacitation
    and sometimes death.
  • As far as sex goes prior to the twentieth century
    women had lower life expectancies than men
    because of the high mortality rates during
    pregnancy and childbirth. Now the roles have been
    switched and its men dying faster because of jobs
    and lifestyles etc.
  • As studies have shown Latinos have the lowest
    death rate and people with color have the highest
    since they live below the poverty line.

Healthcare in the U.S.
  • The U.S. and the Union of South Africa are the
    only developed nations without some form of
    universal health coverage for all citizens.
  • The US has 2 health insurance programs. Medicare
    and Medicaid. Medicare is for 65 and older and
    Medicaid makes healthcare more available to the
    poor.
  • Canadas healthcare is paid for by tax revenues,
    Great Britain healthcare services are available
    at no charge to the entire population, China
    doctors work fee-for service basis

Sociological Perspectives on Health and Medicine
  • Functionalist, Conflict, Symbolic Interactions,
    and Postmodernist perspectives focus on different
    aspects of health and medicine.
  • Functionalist is the sick role where you have
    expectations that define the norms for
    individuals that are sick.
  • Conflict uses the inequalities in health and
    healthcare. Thats when the medical complex
    encompasses both local physicians and hospitals.
  • Symbolic interactions is the social construction
    of illness when nonmedical problems become
    defined and treated as illnesses and disorders.
  • Postmodernist is the clinical gaze when doctors
    gain info by observing the patient, thus
    appearing to speak wisely.

Disability
  • Disability refers to a reduced ability to perform
    tasks one would normally do at a given stage of
    life and that may result in stigmatization or
    discrimination against the person with
    disabilities.
  • There are still social inequalities based on
    disability such as people with vision
    disabilities who are often the objects of
    prejudice and discrimination which affects their
    everyday life.

Healthcare in the future
  • Healthcare in the future is really up to us what
    measure will we take in order to safeguard
    ourselves from illnesses and disorders?
  • Advanced technology will play a major role in the
    future of medical diagnosis and treatment for
    healthcare.
  • The US healthcare organization will continue to
    change in the future with new physician care and
    new ways to treat patients.
