Title: Final Cut Pro

1
Final Cut Pro
  • Transitions Trimming

2
Transitions
  • A transition
  • Visual effect used to change from one clip to the
    next.
  • Indicates a change in time or location in the
    flow of your project.
  • Final Cut Pro comes with a variety of
transitions, but youll probably use dissolves
    and wipes the most.
  • You can also add cross fade audio transitions to
    smooth audio transitions.

3
Adding a transition
  • Once two clips are adjacent to each other on the
timeline, you can add any transition.
  • A transition can start, center, or end on the
edit point between the two clips.
  • Transitions are available through the Effects
menu in the menu bar or the Effects tab in the
    Browser.
  • A transition is displayed as an overlay on top of
the edit point between the two clips.

4
Transition Duration
  • By default, transitions have a total duration of
one second, but you can change this if you want.
  • For a transition to be applied, the two clips
must have unused frames (handles) that overlap
    past the edit point.
  • Handles are the frames before the in point and
after the out point of a clip.
  • These handle frames arent visible in the
sequence but the clip still contains them.

5
Transition Duration
  • Figuring total allowable transition duration
  • Lets say the CU clip on the left has a mark
out point one second before the media end point.
  • Its handle is one second
  • The Debra enters café WS shot has a mark in
point two seconds after the media start point.
  • Its handle is two seconds
  • The total allowable transition between these two
    clips is 3 seconds.

6
Adding Transitions - Effects Menu
  • Select and edit point
  • Click on it
  • Or
  • Position the playhead at the edit point.
  • To add a video transition
  • Choose Effects gt Video Transitions gt transition
type gt then the desired transition from the
    submenu.
  • To add an audio transition
  • Choose Effects gt Audio Transitions gt then choose
the desired transition from the submenu.

7
Adding Transitions - Effects Tab
  • Drag a transition from the Effects tab in the
Browser to an edit point in the Timeline.
  • The selected transition is added to your edit,
    centered at the edit point.

8
Adjusting a Transition
  • You can easily trim transitions in the Timeline
to make them longer or shorter.
  • If the transition is centered on the edit point,
changes in duration extend in both directions.
  • For example, if you want to make a transition
longer by 1 second, drag the start or end point
    out 1/2 second.

9
Adjusting a Transition - Graphical
  • Select the Selection tool in the Tool palette
  • Move the pointer to the beginning or the end of
    the transition in the Timeline
  • The pointer changes to a Resize pointer.
  • Drag the transitions boundary so the new
duration appears in the duration pop-up field.

10
Adjusting a Transition - Numerical
  • Control-click the transition, then choose
    Duration from the shortcut menu.
  • If you enter a duration thats longer than the
available handle amount between the two clips,
you hear an alert sound and the maximum duration
possible is displayed in the dialog.

11
Rendering Transitions
  • Combines video, audio, and applied effects one
    frame at a time.
  • The result is a new file, called a render file,
which is saved with your project and played back
    in real time.
  • The render bar indicates the render status of all
transitions and effects in your sequence.
  • Many transitions play back in real time and do
    not need to be rendered.
  • Items that need rendering have a red bar above
    them.

12
Rendering Transitions
  • The render bar has two regions
  • Upper for video
  • Lower for audio
  • Colors
  • Gray or Green no render necessary
  • Red not visible until rendered
  • To render a transition in your sequence
  • Press Command R
  • Or
  • Select one or more transitions in the Timeline,
choose Sequence gt Render Selection gt Both

13
Default Transition
  • Video
  • 1-second cross dissolve
  • Audio
  • 3 dB audio cross fade
  • Shown underlined and boldface in the Effects tab
    of the Browser
  • The default transition is used when you do an
insert with transition or overwrite with
    transition edit in the Canvas

14
Adding a Default Transition
  • Control-click an edit point between two clips in
    the Timeline
  • Choose Add Transition from the shortcut menu
  • The name of the default transition appears after
    Add Transition
  • or
  • Press Command-T to apply the default video
    transition
  • Press Command-Option-T to apply the default audio
    transition

15
Deleting a Transition
  • Select the transition you want to remove from the
Timeline, then do one of the following
  • Choose Edit gt Clear (or press Delete).
  • or
  • Control-click the transition, then choose Cut
    from the shortcut menu.

16
Trimming
  • Trimming allows you to both shorten and extend
    shots on your timeline.

17
Trimming
  • 3 types of trim edits
  • Ripple edit
  • Adjusts a clips In or Out point, making the clip
    longer or shorter.
  • Subsequent clips move left or right to adjust for
    the change.
  • Ripple delete
  • Removes selected clips from the sequence and
closes the gap by moving all subsequent clips on
    unlocked tracks to the left.
  • Roll edit
  • Adjusts the duration of two adjacent clips at
once by simultaneously adjusting the outgoing
clips Out point and the incoming clips In point.

18
Edit Adjustment Examples
  • The outgoing shot is held too long
  • Its Out point needs to be trimmed shorter by a
    few frames.
  • For example, if a person finishes speaking and
there is too long of a pause before you cut to
the next speaker, you can trim the Out point to
    shorten the pause.
  • The outgoing shot is not held long enough
  • Its Out point needs to be adjusted by adding a
    few frames, making it longer.
  • For example, if a persons voice is cut off in
mid-sentence by the edit, so you extend the
outgoing shot by a few frames.

19
Edit Adjustment Examples
  • The incoming shot starts too soon.
  • Its In point needs to be trimmed later by a few
    frames.
  • For example, if you cut to a shot with a ½ second
lag before the sound-bite, so you trim the In
    Point to remove the lag.
  • The incoming shot starts too late.
  • Its In point needs to be extended earlier.
  • For example, you cut to the sound-bite and the
first word is cut off, so you trim the In Point
to add enough frames to fit the word back into
    the clip.

20
Where You Trim Edits
  • Viewer
  • Click on the clip in the Timeline to open it in
    the Viewer.
  • Change its In and Out points.
  • Timeline
  • Use the trim controls from your toolbar and
    adjust the clip.
  • Trim Edit window
  • Provides a dedicated environment to fine-tune
    edits and preview the results.
  • Displays both sides of an edit
  • Outgoing clip before the edit point
  • Incoming clip that appears after.

21
Ripple Edit
  • Shortens or lengthens a clip and then moves all
subsequent clips in the sequence left or right to
compensate for the changed clip length
  • The overall length of the sequence becomes
    shorter or longer
  • If you shorten a clip, all the other clips after
move left to close the gap
  • If you lengthen a clip, all the other clips after
    move right to make room

22
Ripple Edit
  • You can adjust the clips In point or Out point
in either direction, making it longer or shorter.
  • If you shorten clip A by adjusting the Out point,
use the Ripple tool by moving its Out point to
    the left.
  • Clip B moves to the left by the same number of
    frames.
  • As a result, there is no gap between the two
clips, and the overall sequence is now shorter.

23
Performing a Ripple Edit
  • Select the Ripple tool in the Tool palette (or
    press the R key twice)
  • Select an edit point by clicking near the edge of
    the clip.
  • If linked selection is on, the edit points of
linked clip items are also selected
  • Drag the edit point to lengthen or shorten the
    clip in the sequence

24
Canvas Display Ripple Edit
  • As you adjust the edit, you will see a two-up
    display in the Canvas
  • Out point of the outgoing clip on the left
  • In point of the incoming clip on the right
  • Use this visual feedback to see which outgoing
and incoming frames will be adjacent when you
    finish the edit

25
Ripple Delete
  • A ripple delete is a lot like a ripple edit,
except instead of shortening a clip, you delete
    it entirely.
  • All items to the right of the deleted clip move
to the left, filling in the gap.
  • Performing a ripple delete shortens the duration
    of your sequence.

26
Performing a Ripple Delete
  • Select a clip or range of clips to delete
  • Do one of the following
  • Choose Sequence gt Ripple Delete
  • or
  • Press Shift Delete
  • or
  • Control-click the item or region you want to
delete, then choose Ripple Delete from the
    shortcut menu.

27
Roll Edit
  • Allows you to change when an edit occurs between
two clips, but not the overall length of the
    sequence
  • A roll edit moves the edit point between two
    clips
  • A roll edit trims two clips at once
  • Both the Out point of the outgoing clip (to the
left) and the In point of the incoming clip (to
the right) of the selected edit point move
    simultaneously.
  • If you make one clip shorter, the other gets
    longer, and vice versa.

28
Performing a Roll Edit
  • Select the Roll tool in the Tool palette (or
    press the R key).
  • Select an edit point between two clips.
  • Drag the edit point left or right.
  • As you drag, the Canvas shows the two-up display
with the Out point of the outgoing clip on the
left and the In point of the incoming clip on the
    right.
