Auriga
  • Auriga is a charioteer. He is depicted with a
whip in one hand and a goat in the other, without
a chariot. It is said that Erichthonius invented
the chariot for easy locomotion because of the
lameness he inherited from his father. Because
of his great invention, he was placed up in the
    sky.
  • Can be seen in the western sky, just above
Taurus, which is just above Orion

Hercules
  • Hercules was the son of Jupiter and Alcmena, a
mortal woman, so Hercules was half mortal and
half immortal. For Jupiters infidelity, Juno,
Jupiters wife, set out to destroy Hercules.
After the death of his wife and child, he
completed 12 labors, which included killing Leo
the lion and the multi-headed Hydra, stole the 3
headed guard dog from the underworld, and
diverted 2 rivers to clean a stable that housed
3000 oxen. He also accompanied Jason and the
Argonauts in search of the Golden Fleece. He
finally died after being poisoned and was
    immortalized in the heavens.

  • Hercules can be seen low in the eastern sky,
    across the sky from Orion

5
Cancer
  • The story of Cancer begins with Hercules fighting
the Monster Hydra. Juno sends the crab to
distract Hercules during the fight, but while the
crab is snipping at his feet, Hercules crushes
him under his feet. Juno places Cancer the crab
in the heavens to reward it for its services.
  • Very faint and hard to see

6
Virgo
  • Virgo is said to be Demeter, the Earth Goddess.
Zeus and Demeter had a daughter named Persephone.
One day Persephone was abducted by Hades, God of
the underworld, and Demeter ruined the harvest in
search of her daughter and many people were dying
of starvation, until finally Zeus intervened and
made a decree where Persephone would spend only
part of the year in the underworld with Hades.
    Explaining the summers and winters.

7
Libra
  • Libra is represented by the Scales. It dates
back to the Egyptians, when the scale was used by
the God of the Dead, Anubis, to weigh the souls
of the dead to determine their values which was
based on what they did on Earth. If the soul was
worthy, then they would be able to enter the
    Kingdom of Osiris, or heaven

8
Scorpio
  • Scorpio comes from the story of Orion. This is
the scorpion that killed Orion, either when
Mother Earth sent Scorpio to kill Orion because
of his over size ego, or when Orion tried to
force himself upon Artemis, she had Scorpio sting
    Orion.

9
Leo
  • Leo was a Nemean lion which Hercules had to kill
as the first of his 12 labors. Leo was a
ferocious beast who kill anyone that went near
it. Not only was it more fierce, larger and
stronger than other lions, but it also had the
advantage of having skin which could not be
pierced by metal, stone or wood. Because of this,
Hercules could not kill the lion with any weapon,
so he wrestled it with his bare hands, where he
then was able to strangle Leo. Hercules then
removed the lions skin with its own claw and
wore it as a cloak. Juno, still being angry with
Hercules, placed Leo in the heavens for its
    services.
  • Can be seen underneath Ursa Major

10
Sagittarius
  • Sagittarius represents the immortal centaur
Chiron, who was known for his gentleness. He was
put up into the heavens in recognition of his
goodness. He was accidentally shot by an arrow
dipped in poison by Hercules. Because of his
immortality, he suffered in agony without being
able to die. Chiron offered to take the place of
Prometheus who was chained to a rock where an
eagle would at his liver because he gave man the
gift of fire. Chiron took Prometheuss place and
for that Zeus placed him in the heavens.

11
Capricorn
  • The story is related to the ten year war between
the Titans and the Gods of Olympus. In order to
flee and escape the monster Typhon, Pan
(Capricorn) jumped in the Nile where the bottom
half turned into a fishes tail and the head and
    torso transformed into a goat.

12
Taurus
  • Taurus is represented by a bull. It is said that
Zeus fell for the beauty of Europa. One day
while Europa was near the waters edge, Zeus came
down in his animal form, as a white bull. He
then knelt by her and she climbed onto his back.
He then sprang to his feet and jumped into the
sea and started swimming to the island of Crete
    where she became his mistress.
  • Can be seen just above Orion in the western sky

13
Aquarius
  • Aquarius is the water carrier. One story tells
of Ganymede a prince of Troy, and while he was
watching over his fathers flock of sheep, the
God Zeus sent a giant bird down and carried him
back up to the heavens, where he remained the
water carrier for the Gods. Another story tells
of Deucalion and Pyrrha being the only survivors
of a great flood, and they threw rocks over their
shoulders as they walk across the land, which
    turned into men and women.

14
Pisces
  • Pisces is represented by Aphrodite, the goddess
of beauty, and her son Eros, the god of love.
One day while walking along the banks of a river,
the monster Typhons, the same monster who was
trying to overthrow Zeus, attacked them. As many
of the other gods, Aphrodite and Eros transformed
themselves into animals in order to escape. They
turned into fish and swam away. So to
commemorate the day love and beauty were saved,
they were placed in the sky.
