WHAT IS UNICODE?
Unicode (1114112 chars)
ASCII Character Chart (128 chars)
Our current standard, ASCII, defines 128
characters.
Unicode can define up to 1.1 million characters,
including Klingon!

Display of non-Roman characters is currently
quite limited. The new release will make it
possible to display any character in any language.

CHOICE OF BROWSER FONT
In order to display Unicode characters properly,
youll have to choose a browser font that
supports Unicode characters

INPUT METHOD EDITORS
To allow for input in multiple character sets on
a single keyboard, we now have Global IMEs or
Input Method Editors.
Floating Language Bar (anywhere on screen)
Once you have installed multiple character set
support, youll see a Language Bar, either
floating over your screen or on the Task Bar.

SETTING UP IMEs
Youll probably need help from ITD for this.
Click these on

USING GLOBAL IMEs
Choose a language from the list. Your list may
be different than other peoples lists.
When you choose a language, it changes the way
your keyboard works. Youve got to know the
keyboard layout in order to input characters
correctly.

USING AN IME
With my language bar set to Russian (RU), I
typed Nhel leib to get these characters.
You have to know the keyboard layout in order to
know what keys to press.

RIGHT-TO-LEFT LANGUAGES
As I type, the characters move to the right, with
new input displaying on the left.

KEYWORD TRUNCATION
This is Arabic for Islam. If I want to find
either Islam (???????) or Islami (????????),
I have to truncate my term. The truncation
symbol is a question mark, but must be an English
one. So, I input the word in Arabic, then switch
to English to enter the question mark. Although
Arabic is right-to-left, English is
left-to-right, so the question mark appears at
the right of the word.

CHINESE CHARACTERS
The Chinese (PRC) language IME has the user
type words in the Pinyin transliteration scheme
and translates them, one ideograph at a time, to
Chinese characters.
Sometimes a later ideograph can alter a previous
one.

JAPANESE CHARACTERS
As I type the letters bijutsukan, they appear
in this format. When Im done and hit a final
space, it changes it to the form below. The
Japanese IME has lots of options, so this may
work differently for you, depending on what
options you choose.

If we choose to, we can replace our drop-down
type Course Reserves searching for an alphabetic
browse type searching.

The changes in the Voyager circulation client are
small, but helpful.

INTERESTING CHANGE 1
New customizable special character entry mode
With my cursor in a field, I can open the box
above and insert special characters with the
Insert or Insert/Close buttons. Or I can go to
Special Character Entry mode with CTRL-D and then
type the key on the left to produce the related
special character.

INTERESTING CHANGE 2
MARC21 Character Set validation and
decomposition control (well leave these as is)
There are some Unicode characters that are
outside the MARC21 standard, but we want to keep
our records as standard as possible. The
standard also uses Decomposition, which means
that accents and the letters they modify are
stored separately. So, well keep these options
unclicked and validate our records.

DIACRITICS ENTRY
Probably the change that will affect catalogers
most is in the way diacritics are entered. They
now go after the character they modify.

CATALOGING FONT
You can use any font you like in the Cataloging
module, although only a few fonts will display
all Unicode characters.

VOYAGER PASSWORDS
Voyager passwords are less important than Windows
passwords, but they still need to be secure. All
Voyager passwords will change as of the upgrade.
Generic login password changes are already in
progress. The call for changes to individual
passwords will go out the week of 13 December
2004.
Only the password will change, not the Operator

ACCESS 2003
The new image being installed right now will
replace Access 2000 with Access 2003. This is a
very minor change and shouldnt affect Reporter
or ad hoc reporting. However, the switch to the
Unicode release may require changes to some parts
of one or the other or both. Stay tuned

JUST ANOTHER UPGRADE
When all is said and done, the Voyager with
Unicode release is not a terribly big one. It
wont be very disruptive to current workflow, but
will add some new things that may improve some
aspects of our service. Weve lived through a lot
worse.
