Title: CPA Football Program
1CPA Football Program OVERVIEW Becoming a
Warrior and a Brother How CPA Uses Football to
Train Difference Makers and Culture Changers Jay
Mathews, Head Varsity Football Coach
2- The Vision We want God to be glorified by using
Biblical foundations and a Christian environment
to train winners in the game of football. We want
the players football experience to be so
powerful and life changing, that they go on to
make a difference in society. We want our program
to produce godly men, courageous and competitive,
who want to take the gospel of Jesus Christ into
all parts of culture and the world. We want to be
so significant in this process that people have
to take note of what is happening in our midst
and it creates a desire to duplicate the program
in many ways throughout America. This cannot
happen without Gods Spirit, provision, and
protection. - A CPA football team has a look a feel a spirit
3- WHERE DOES VICTORY COME FROM?
- I Chronicles 2912 Both riches and honor come
from You, and You rule over all. In Your hand are
power and might, and in Your hand it is to make
great and to give strength to all. - Psalm 443 for not by their own sword did they
win the land, nor did their own arm save them,
but Your right hand and Your arm, and the light
of Your face, for You delighted in them.
4- A Promise - A Paraphrase of Lev. 261 "Do not
make football an idol. I, the LORD, am your God.
2 You must strive to keep my moral law and show
reverence for my sanctuary. I am the LORD. 3 "If
you keep my laws and are careful to obey my
commands, 4 I will create an environment for
success. 5 Your season of harvest will be
blessed. 6 "I will give you uncommon peace and
confidence, and you will be able to sleep without
fear. I will remove the forces that seek to
destroy you. 7 In fact, you will chase down all
your opponents and overcome them with skillful
weapons. 8 Fifty of you will overcome a hundred,
and a hundred of you will chase ten thousand! All
your opponents will fall beneath the blows of
your weapons. 9 "I will look favorably upon you
and multiply your people and fulfill my covenant
with you. 10 You will have such a surplus of
success that you will need to remove the
blessings of one season to make room for the
next. 11 I will live among you, and I will not
despise you. 12 I will walk among you I will be
your God, and you will be my people.

8DEVELOPING THE TEAM
- LEARNING TO LOVE
- LEARNING TO TRUST
- LEARNING TO MAKE GOOD DECISIONS
- LEARNING HOW TO PRACTICE AND TRAIN
- LEARNING HOW TO FIGHT
- LEARNING HOW TO WIN
- LEARNING HOW TO WIN A BIG GAME
- LEARNING HOW TO WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP
9LEARNING TO LOVE
- EXTREMELY DIFFICULT IN TODAYS SOCIETY
- NEED A BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE AND DEFINITION
- HAS TO BE MODELED BY COACHES AND LEADERS
- OPPOSITE OF LOVE IS SELFISHNESS
- CORE OF LOVE IS FORGIVENESS
- A TEAM MATE IS YOUR BROTHER
- BUILD UP, ENCOURAGE, AND SERVE
II TIMOTHY 3 1 You should also know this,
Timothy, that in the last days there will be very
difficult times. 2 For people will love only
themselves and their money. They will be boastful
and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their
parents, and ungrateful. They will consider
nothing sacred. 3 They will be unloving and
unforgiving they will slander others and have no
self-control they will be cruel and have no
interest in what is good. 4 They will betray
their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with
pride, and love pleasure rather than God. 5 They
will act as if they are religious, but they will
reject the power that could make them godly."
10LEARNING TO TRUST
- CAN WE TRUST YOU?
- Players trust players
- Coaches trust coaches
- Players trust coaches
- Coaches trust players
- Trust is developed over time as men show
consistently their integrity, their values, and
their selfless service- especially when it is
difficult to do so. - Without trust- everything will crumble under
pressure.
11LEARNING TO MAKE GOOD DECISIONS
- I will make decisions consistent with my values.
- How I live is more of who I am than what I say.
- CONNECTING DOTS.UNDERSTANDING CONSEQUENCES
- MENTAL REHEARSAL OF POTENTIAL CONSEQUENCES
- Sports Illustrated did a feature of GLEN RIDGE
HS, New Jersey football after rape charges were
filed against several team members and discovered
a number of interesting labels - The team was known for severe treatment of
females and non-athletes. - The team was known for verbal boasts and feelings
of superiority. - The team was known for violent and physical
aggression, especially against the weak. - The teams coaches encouraged the behavior by
encouraging elitism and above average
toughness. - It took three weeks to report the crimes the
other behavior had been going on for years. - WHAT SHOULD BE THE REPUTATION OF CPA FOOTBALL?
- HOW CAN THAT REPUTATION BE NURTURED?
- WHAT WOULD OUR REPUTATION BE IF EVERYONE WERE
JUST LIKE ME? - ARE COACHES COMMITTED TO TEACHING CONSEQUENCES?
- ARE PARENTS SUPPORTIVE OF TEAM AND SCHOOL
CONSEQUENCES?
12LEARNING HOW TO PRACTICE AND TRAIN
- TRAINING IN TOUGHNESS
- HOW TO GET TOUGHER
- Learn to face your fears little by little and
day by day. Never shrink away from contact and
never hold back reserve during a workout. Trust
that your coaches will monitor you. Have a
determined will to never miss a rep and finish
each drill. When you fall or get knocked down,
get up! Remember Rocky, the man is measured by
how hard he can be hit and get back up. None of
us are as tough as we need to be, but over time
we can all get tougher! - TRAINING LIKE A CHAMPION IS AN INVESTMENT
- Hard work and technique can beat talent
- THE BIGGEST KEYS TO CHAMPIONSHIP TRAINING
- EFFORT AND CONSISTENCY
- Perfect reps performed with maximum effort
- A radical commitment to FINISH!
- DO IT ALL- Do not miss even one rep!
- FIND AND BE A GREAT TRAINING PARTNER- push each
other to greatness - PREPARE BEFORE THE WORKOUT- I will work like a
champion - MENTALLY REHEARSE SUCCESS
- EMBRACE PAIN- it is weakness leaving the body
- DONT TRY TO WIN AN ACADEMY AWARD- JUST LIFT AND
RUN! - Remember- workouts do not build the body- they
are designed to break it down.
13LEARNING HOW TO FIGHT
- Every army, in order to prevail on the
battlefield, needs a certain number of people
capable of courage, initiative or leadership
beyond the norm. Max Hastings, Warriors - PRACTICE COMPETITION
- ANYTHING WORTH HAVING IS WORTH FIGHTING FOR
- NO ONE IS GOING TO GIVE IT TO YOU
14LEARNING HOW TO WIN
- Winning is a habit. It is not a some of the
time thing it is an all of the time
thing Coach Bear Bryant - Winning is hard, some say fragile- it is never
by accident or luck. Dont wish for luck- you
better go, fight, and win it. - Winning is an attitude- during a tough fight you
must keep believing you will win. - A loser is always expecting something bad to
happen. A loser has little confidence. A loser
has little trust. - To a winner- Losing is not an option-Show me a
good loser and Ill show you a loser
15LEARNING HOW TO WIN A BIG GAME
- At CPA we play in Big Games.
- Because we are CPA, every game is a Big Game.
- We win Big Games long before the kick off of Big
Games - Big Games are Fun Games
- Plan, prepare, execute, poise, intensity,
fundamentals, unity, fight, celebrate!
16LEARNING HOW TO WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP
- PLAYOFF MAXIMS
- EXPECT INCREDIBLE INTENSITY- THIS IS NO LONGER A
GAME IT IS A DEATH MATCH - EXPECT TIGHT GAMES
- AN EASY OR EARLY LEAD IS A DANGEROUS PLACE TO BE
- AS THE DAYS GROW COLDER AND DARKER, IT MAY COME
DOWN TO A WILL TO KEEP GOINGCOUNT THE SENIORS - SEW UP THE KICKING GAME
- TURNOVERS CAN BE KILLERS
- IF THINGS GO WRONG EARLY, DONT PANIC, TRUST YOUR
BROTHERS, TRUST YOUR TRAINING - JUST WIN- THE GOAL IS TO STILL BE ALIVE
17DAY TO DAY REALITIES

20VARSITY SPRING FOOTBALL(MAY)
- The goals of week 1 practice are
- Recruiting, teaching language, and basic
fundamentals- HAVING FUN! - THE WEEK 2 PLAN WILL BE DEPENDENT ON WEEK 1
RESULTS. - Why conduct Spring football practice?
- The TSSAA allows 10 days of full pad practice
during the school year. We believe taking
advantage of this is imperative for the teaching
of safe techniques and fundamentals, especially
to younger players. - What about conflict with Spring Sports?
- We actively encourage and promote our varsity
players to fulfill their spring sport
participation with enthusiasm and excellence. We
usually have only a few varsity players who are
not participating in a spring sport. Spring time
for us usually means younger athletes getting the
vast amount of attention, which is a good thing! - Cancellation of practices.
- There could be a scenario where lack of
available numbers causes us to cancel some or all
of our spring practices. This is a subjective
decision made by our staff when numbers may
unintentionally cause negative momentum in the
program. We hope that that does not become an
issue, but is always a possibility. In the long
run, this does hurt our program.

33QUOTES AND ENDNOTES
- I dont just want Christ on our uniforms, I
want Him in our hearts - Football is a great game, but it is a terrible
god - Every trend in culture right now seems to be
working against Christianity and football
