Title: Green Day eco uniforms
1Green Day eco uniforms
- To accompany page 11 of Green Day activity kit
and homework activity card
2Learning objectives
- To understand the processes involved in producing
clothes. - To understand that environmental impact of
producing clothes can be reduced.
3Task 1 materials challenge You have one
minute to list all the materials that the clothes
you are wearing are made from.
4Examples
- Rubber
- Silk
- Leather
- Cotton
- Metal
- Wool
- Viscose
- Polyester
-
5Task 2 discuss in pairs Are they natural or
man-made? Can you name the raw materials?
6Examples
- Rubber - tree
- Silk - worm
- Leather - cow
- Cotton - plant
- Metal - rock
- Wool - sheep
- Viscose - tree
- Polyester - oil
7Teacher information For sharing with class as
appropriate to age, ability and time.
8Cotton
- Negative
- Highly damaging in that it is water, pesticide
and artificial fertiliser intensive. It is also
grown in a great number of countries that are
considered water scarce. - Alternative
- Use recycled cotton and source cotton from
farmers that adopt Better Management Practices
that consider water, pesticides and fertiliser
use. Organic cotton is also a better option so
long as water is managed appropriately. -
9Leather
- Negative
- The tanning process can be extremely water
intensive. - Alternative
- Where water is treated effectively after tanning
to ensure it is at a good standard when returned
back into natural water courses. Animal welfare
is also a consideration in leather production.
10Polyester
- Negative
- Use of non renewable resources the oil required
to produce polyester is a finite resource. - Alternative
- Recycled polyester such as used in MSs eco
uniform.
11Viscose
- Use a renewable resource, wood pulp. This is more
sustainable provided that the wood used comes
from a forest source that has been well managed
to a standard such as the Forest Stewardship
Council, FSC.
12Processing
- There is a lot of water consumed in dyeing and
finishing clothing garments and tanning leather
garments. In some parts of the world the controls
on how water effluent is treated can be poor so
freshwater ways are also at risk from pollution.
Processors need to consider the water and energy
used within the dyeing and finishing process.
13Task 3 group discussions (optional) To
further challenge KS3 pupils split the class into
six groups and give each group one of the
following six topics to discuss.
14Topics 1-2
- Raw materials referencing the list, ask pupils
which materials are non renewable and discuss the
term sustainable raw material with them. - Processing invite pupils to investigate how
high use of energy, water and chemical treatments
is bad for the environment.
15Topics 3-4
- Manufacturing discuss where clothes are made
and how factories could be more sustainable. - Reference MS eco factory
- http//plana.marksandspencer.com/green-factory
- Sale ask pupils to think about where clothes
are sold and how stores could be more
sustainable. - Reference MS eco store
- http//plana.marksandspencer.com/eco-stores-green
-light/
16Topics 5-6
- After care ask pupils how they can reduce
energy and water use in looking after their
clothes. - Disposal invite pupils to discuss how they
would encourage people to reduce the amount of
clothes sent to landfill.
17Task 4 recycling challenge One of the
household items in front of you is used to create
recycled school uniforms. In a pair, see if you
can guess which one and which part of your
uniform it has become. You have 2 minutes!
18Answer Plastic bottles to polyester skirts
and trousers!
19Task 5 memory challenge Watch this sequence
of making eco uniforms youll need to remember
this for your homework tonight!

212. Chopped into small chips
223. Made into polyester fibres
Task 1 - materials Give pupils one minute to
list all the materials that the clothes they are
wearing are made from
