55
Search Methods
  • You can use the Match Any Field or Match All
Fields options at the top of the Advanced Search
    screen.
  • Match Any Field will act as an OR operator
e.g. selecting match any fields and typing
brain in the top field and cancer right
beneath it, will find records containing the
words brain or cancer somewhere in the
    field(s) you are searching
  • Match All Fields will act as an AND operator
e.g. selecting match all fields and typing
brain in the top field and cancer right
beneath it, will find records containing the
words brain and the word cancer somewhere in
    the field(s) you are searching

56
More Search Methods
  • Within the rows are or operators that function
within the broader match all or match any
    options.
  • You can add any number of exclusion fields.
Instead of using the NOT operator, you can
choose specific fields where you dont want a
    term to appear.

57
Search Language Other Tricks
  • You can use these special characters to connect
your search terms for specific results
  • Wild Card find variations on a word e.g.,
ENVIROMENT finds profiles with words such as
    ENVIRONMENTAL and ENVIRONMENTS.
  • Proximity w/ find words used together but not
necessarily in an exact phrase e.g., WIND w/2
ENERGY finds profiles where these two words are
separated by not more than two words, such as
those with the phrase WINDTURBINE ENERGY.

58
Search Language Other Tricks
  • Exact Phrase find a precise phrase e.g.,
WIND ENERGY in quotation marks finds profiles
where these two words appear together as a
    phrase.
  • Precedence ( ) execute a series of search
commands in a particular order e.g., (HIV OR
AIDS) NOT EDUCATION finds profiles with the terms
HIV and/or AIDS, then excludes those with the
    word EDUCATION.

59
Record Share
You can e-mail any record to colleagues, even if
they dont have access to COS Funding
Opportunities.
60
Record Share
Fill out the form, listing up to 5 recipient
e-mail addresses, then send.
61

to the funding opportunity. That link is good for
14 days.
62
Citation Manager
To download and save your results, click
Download Citations to see a window allowing you
to do so.
63

64
Citation Manager Results
This is the download of the full records in HTML
format. Go to File then Save as to save it
to open and read later offline.
65
Refine your Query
Start with a broad search, then narrow it by
searching within your results. This example shows
a search with 1217 initial results.
66
Refine your Query
You will be taken back to the main search form
that will show you your previous choices. Add
genetic to your original search of brain or
cancer to search within the initial 1217
results.
67

72

to run the search anew. She can then save it to
her COS Workbench. She can also save the link or
use it on a webpage.

same information. When you save it, you can
continue working.
75
Track Records
You can track individual Funding Opportunities on
your Workbench and be notified when those records
are updated.
76
Track Records
Tags are one-word descriptors that you can assign
to your tracked funding records to help you
organize and remember them. Tagging lets you
categorize your tracked records in your own
words. If you put a space in your tag name, a new
tag is created.
If not already logged in, youll be prompted to
log in (just like in the save search section).
77
Saved Records
The Cancer Research/Clinical Fellowship Awards
opportunity has been added to my tracked
opportunities. Whenever the opportunity is
updated by the COS editors, it will be marked as
Recently Updated on your COS Workbench.
Tip You can track up to 200 opportunities at a
time on your COS Workbench.
78
Record Share
You can sort your records by clicking on a tag.
This will display only those records that you
have so tagged.
79
