2
The Issues Defined by Workplace Flu Prevention
Working Group
  • Late Delivery - vaccine arriving as late as
    December.
  • Late vaccination scheduling - Mandated to delay
    start of vaccinations until
  • November 1.
  • High price of vaccine and seasonal price
    gouging.
  • Price differential between vials and single
    dose prefilled syringes that
  • drastically reduce vaccine waste in the
    workplace setting.
  • Lack of safety devices on prefilled syringes.
  • Returns policy.

3
Identified Solutions
  • Creating and communicating realistic
    expectations for employers and
  • employees regarding vaccination dates.
  • Clarifying the intent of the ACIP - If there is
    a vaccine available, why
  • cant it be given prior to November 1st?
  • Dont schedule clinics / programs until vaccine
    for that clinic / program
  • has arrived.

4
?s Posed to Three Manufacturers
  • Why are flu vaccine costs what they are? What
    factors have contributed
  • to the nearly doubling of price over the
    last decade?
  • Why is the vaccine delivered as late as it is
now? Are there built in delays?
  • What would a dramatic reduction in workplace
flu vaccine demand do to the
  • economics of flu vaccine manufacture and
    delivery?
  • Are you aware of or have an understanding of
    diminished / reduced workplace
  • flu shot demand as the holidays approach?
  • Why was the returns policy changed several
    years ago and what alternatives
  • to the current Zero returns policy would
    you consider?
  • Would you be willing to participate in a
    vaccine reallocation process - either
  • through supporting a hotline or some other
    mechanism?

5
Issues That Remain Unresolved
  • Late delivery
  • Late vaccination scheduling - how can we give
25 million doses in 3 weeks?
  • High price of vaccine
  • Price differential between vials and single
    dose prefilled syringes that
  • drastically reduce vaccine waste in the
    workplace setting.
  • Lack of safety devices on prefilled syringes
  • Zero returns policy

  • CONCLUSIONS/SOURCE OF SERIOUS CONCERN
  • PRICE
  • Increasing Price is decreasing the workplace
    demand.
  • What will be the effect of a major
    decrease in the workplace
  • demand and delivery of flu vaccine on the
    market?
  • SHORTENED DELIVERY CHAIN
  • FLU VACCINATION DELIVERY TIMELINE
  • Is it realistic to expect to deliver 30 million
    doses of vaccine
  • between Nov 1st and Thanksgiving?
