Is it a Group?

• People define themselves as members and
  distinguish themselves from non-members they
  establish boundaries
• Groups have tasks that members share along with
  group outcomes that members seek to achieve
• Groups operate within a wider context and have
  relationships with that context that influence
  what occurs in the group

Group Effectiveness

• 1. Does the groups output meet the standards of
  those who use that output?
• 2. Do group experiences enhance members
  abilities work together in future?
• 3. Do group experiences contribute to members
  growth and personal well-being?
• 4. What weight should each criterion have?

Enabling Conditions

• Does the group exert sufficient effort to
  accomplish its task? (Effort problem)
• Does the group have adequate knowledge and skill
  to carry out its task? (Talent problem)
• Does the group use appropriate task performance
  strategies likely to lead to effectiveness?
  (Strategy problem)

Enabling Structures

• Task structure is the work meaningful and
  motivating?
• Group Composition is the group size appropriate
  for the task, is needed expertise available and
  is their sufficient diversity?
• Group norms were initial expectations converted
  to group norms that are strong enough to
  appropriately regulate behavior?

Enabling Contexts

• Reward Systems do these provide enough
  recognition and reinforcement for desired
  performance?
• Educational Systems is there sufficient
  training and assistance available to ensure
  desired performance?
• Information Systems does the group have the
  information it needs to work?
