Public Opinion

• There are many different publics.
• Not many issues attract the attention of all
  Americans.
• Public opinion can be described as those
  attitudes held by a significant number of people
  on matters of government and politics.

Family and Education

• Political socialization is a complex process.
• The family is an important agent of
  socialization.
• Children learn certain things and use these
  things to later build their opinions.
• Schools teach children many attitudes to become
  good citizens.
• Informal learning is important in schools.

Other Factors

• Occupation and race can influence a persons
  opinion.
• The mass media has tremendous influence on
  peoples opinions.
• Peer group members share many of the same
  opinions.
• Opinion leaders (Martin Luther King Jr.) have
  heavy influence.
• Historical events can shape opinion. (Depression)
