Title: Project 1:1 Implementing Handheld Computers in the Seaford School District

  • The integration of technology into the
classrooms can contribute to increased student
achievement. This occurs when technology is
available to students on a widespread basis and
when teachers create activities that integrate
the technology meaningfully. While the handheld
computer doesnt have the full functionality of
the desktop computer, access in a 11 environment
may be more important. The mobility and
    functionality of handheld computers lend
themselves to the K-12 environment in a cost
    effective method.

3
  • Teachers, nurses, counselors and school
    administrators all have handheld computers
  • These operate in a wireless environment
  • These are productivity and organizational tools
that link their home and school computers

Seaford School District
4
  • Each school needs access to at least one class
set of handheld computers for student use
  • Opportunities must exist for students to take
home handheld computers to help bridge the
    digital divide (access)

Seaford School District
5
  • Teachers can plan instructional activities that
    use the handheld computers
  • Probes can be used to assist in science and
    health activities

Seaford School District
6
  • Teachers can use the handhelds for
  • Creating instructional activities
  • Scheduling and tracking meetings
  • Creating assessments
  • Documenting student behaviors
  • Becoming more mobile within the school

Seaford School District
7
  • Guidance Counselors can use handhelds for
  • Documenting meetings and interactions with
    students and parents
  • Scheduling
  • Interacting with the student databases

Seaford School District
8
  • Nurses can use handhelds for
  • Keeping the student medical logs updated
  • Taking notes during meetings
  • Accessing emergency information

Seaford School District
9
  • School Administrators can use handhelds for
  • Accessing student databases for schedules
  • Documenting meetings
  • Beaming notes and information

Seaford School District
10
  • Students can use handhelds for
  • Conducting science experiments
  • Word processing
  • Graphing and calculating
  • Accessing e-books and reference materials

Seaford School District
11
  • Students can use handhelds for

  • I think it is important to encourage others to
try new technologies and to extend themselves
into new areas.. Take the time to show him or
her how to get started. Share your sandbox. It
is to everyones benefit to create a stimulating,
    creative, and renewing work environment.

  • Wireless network installed to support handheld
    computers
  • Handhelds for staff

  • July 2004 at Seaford Middle School
  • Handhelds for staff

Seaford School District
22
  • July 2004 at the 4 Elementary Schools
  • At least one class set (30 handhelds with
keyboards, printer and three laptops for syncing
purposes) to be rotated between the schools as
    needed
  • Wireless environment for the handhelds
  • Handhelds for staff

Seaford School District
23
  • We want to make a request to the PFSE for the
    following
  • As an addendum to the current PFSE grants,
provide 65,000 to the elementary consortium CIT
in order to fund staff handheld computers
    (limited to school teachers, nurses,
    administrators, and guidance counselors).
  • Seaford School District will install a wireless
network to support the handhelds over the summer

Seaford School District
24
  • We want to make a request to the PFSE for the
    following
  • Allow the middle and high school CITs make a
proposal to reallocate up to 35,000 of next
years PFSE award money to provide staff
    handhelds if they want to.

Seaford School District
25
  • PFSE will consider the elementary proposal and
the possible middle and high school requests on
    the following conditions
  • It must be submitted ASAP as an addendum to the
    current grants
  • There must be plan that is research based, that
justifies the validity of staff access to
handhelds and that meets the original goals of
    the PFSE grants
  • There must be a written request from SMS and SHS
    co-chairs supporting this plan

Seaford School District
26
  • PFSE will consider the elementary proposal and
the possible middle and high school requests on
    the following conditions
  • The SMS and SHS requests must indicate what has
changed from the original proposal to warrant a
    reallocation
  • This needs to be part of multi-year study, with
data collected, on changing staff attitudes,
    perceptions and practices

Seaford School District
27
  • The district will use local funds to support the
    following
  • Installation of wireless networks at all schools
  • Implement 1 set of wireless laptops (16) with
security cart to SHS media center for use within
    the school
  • Assist SMS in implementing classroom computers if
    not covered in other grants

Seaford School District
28
  • Staff members will be invited to participate in a
3 year study of staff perceptions using handheld
    computers
  • Staff will be assigned in groups of 4-5 within a
school to implement the Learning Community Model
  • Groups will need to meet in Sept, Oct, Jan, Feb,
and April to complete the Learning Community
    tasks

Seaford School District
29
  • Each Learning Community task involves sharing of
handheld uses by the LC, accessing some to-dos
from a special website, entering a discussion
group on-line, and making individual on-line
    journal entries
  • www.seaford.k12.de.us/it/pda/home.htm
  • We will survey participants in Sept. 04, June 05,
June 06 and June 07 to collect our data.

Seaford School District
30
  • Participants will volunteer for the project
  • We do not have stipends for the LC meetings but
we will for the initial training
  • If participants stop participating or leave the
    district, they return the handheld
  • Handhelds are not given to participants but on
    loan

Seaford School District
31
  • What do we need ?
  • Written Plan
  • Decisions by SHS and SMS CIT
  • Formation of an elementary CIT and their approval
    or rejection
  • Submit plan to PFSE
