Cardiovascular Disease
  • The Number One Killer In the United States
  • By Shane Taylor

2
What is CVD?
  • Cardiovascular disease refers to diseases of the
heart and diseases of the blood vessel system
(arteries, capillaries, veins) within a person's
entire body, such as the brain, legs, and lungs.
"Cardio" refers to the heart and "vascular"
refers to the blood vessel system

3
Facts about CVD
  • Estimates for the year 2002 are that 70,100,000
Americans have one or more forms of
    cardiovascular disease (CVD).
  • Claimed 927,448 lives in 2002 (38.0 percent of
all deaths or 1 of every 2.6 deaths). One death
    every 33 seconds
  • Over 150,000 Americans killed by CVD are under
    age 65.(AHA)

Causes of Death in the United States

Another look
6
Most Common Types of CVD
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Coronary heart disease, which includes heart
attack and angina pectoris (chest pain)
  • Stroke
  • Heart failure

7
High Blood Pressure
  • Systolic
  • Normal Less than 120
  • Prehypertension 120-139
  • High
  • Stage 1 140-159
  • Stage 2 160-or higher

8
Warning Signs for Heart Attacks
  • Chest discomfort- Experience a pain and
discomfort in the heart that last a long period
of time, and may tend to go away and come back
gain. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure,
    squeezing, fullness or pain.
  • Discomfort in other areas of the upper
body. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in
one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or
    stomach.
  • Shortness of breath. May occur with or without
    chest discomfort.
  • Other signs These may include breaking out in a
cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness  (AHA)

9
Warning signs for strokes
  • Weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on
    one side of the body
  • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or
    understanding
  • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of
    balance or coordination
  • Sudden, severe headache with no
  • known cause (AHA)

10
Heart Failure
  • Nearly 5 million Americans are living with heart
failure, and 550,000 new cases are diagnosed each
    year.
  • Heart failure is usually a chronic disease.
That means it's a long-term condition that tends
to gradually become worse. By the time someone is
diagnosed, chances are that the heart has been
losing pumping capacity little by little for
    quite a while.

11
Strategies to Help Prevent CVD
  • Dont smoke or use Tobacco
  • Exercise
  • Eat Healthy
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Get regular health screening

12
Fundraising For CVD (by AHA)
  • Heart Walk- This year over 1,000,000 walkers will
participate in more than 600 events across the
    country
  • Hoops For Heart
  • Heart to Heart E-card Greeting
  • Jump Rope for Heart
  • Dear Neighborhood Campaign
  • Train To End Stroke

13
Go Red For Women
  • February 4 marks annual National Wear Red Day
for Women!  Join the millions of women across the
Mid-Atlantic Affiliate who will wear red to help
raise awareness of heart disease as the No. 1
killer of women. Show your support of the Go Red
For Women movement by wearing red, sporting your
red dress pin and becoming a part of
reducing heart disease in Americas women. (AHA)

14
Choices You Make
  • The lifestyle choices people make play a major
role in the prevention of CVD. Regular
consumption of alcohol, smoking, stress, high
blood pressure, and elevated cholesterol levels
all may lead to a heart problem. Healthy eating
habits and exercising on a daily basis
dramatically decreases ones risk of having a
    heart attacks.
