Terms of reference

• Consortium was contracted by the Cement and
  Concrete Institute (CCI) on behalf of its
  members to
• Investigate the influence of the new SABS EN
  197-1 cement specifications on the use of cement
  as a road material stabiliser.

• Interviews within the industry
• Changes in the cement production process,
• Known changes in chemistry,
• Changes in quality assurance testing,
• Any other aspects regarded as important
• Phase 2
• Limited laboratory testing
• Evaluate theoretical influence of changes
• Lab testing to support these

• Four factories visited
• Drafting report on Phase 1 (end Nov)

Preliminary conclusions

• Chemistry essentially unchanged
• Poorer quality coal (higher C3A)
• Offset by higher CaSO4
• Grinding aids
• Finer grinding to get higher strengths quicker
• EN 197-1 and old SABS 471 testing
