The Hawthorne Effect
  • a short-term improvement caused by observing

  • Originated from studies done in the late 20s

  • A particular study noted that as lights were made
brighter, workers would become more efficient
  • What explains workers also becoming more
    efficient when lights were dimmed?

9
Panopticism
  • The Panopticon was designed by Jeremy Bentham in
the late 18th Century, but was never actually
    built.
  • Panopticism is a tactic of placing workers (or
prisoners) in areas of maximum visibility so that
they have no way of telling whether they are
    actually being watched.

  • Microsoft make plans for a computer system that
links workers to their computers via wireless
sensors that measure their metabolism (Mostrous
    Brown, 2008).
  • The system would allow managers to monitor
employees performance by measuring heart rate,
body temperature, movement, facial expression and
    blood pressure (Mostrous Brown, 2008).
