What do I need to do in order to be safe in lab?

General

• Report all spills and accidents immediately.
• Know location of emergency equipment.
• No horseplay.

Lab Preps and Procedures

• Understand the instructions.
• Follow instructions.
• Clean up and wash hands.

Chemicals

• Read and double check all labels.
• Add acid to water.
• Do not return unused chemicals back to the
  original jar.

Glassware

• Do not use damaged glassware.
• Do not handle broken glass.
• Use pyrex glass.

Heating

• Never look into a container that is being heated.
• Turn off burner when not in use.
• Do not point opening of a container directly to
  someone.

Dissection

• Cut away from you.
• Never touch your eyes, mouth, etc. after handling
  preserved organisms.
• Dispose of animals properly. Never let them
  leave the room.

General Information About Lab

• Labs are performed in pairs.
• Partners will be assigned.
• Each partner is responsible for the actions of
  the other partner except in extreme
  circumstances.

• 5 points will be deducted from your lab grade for
  the following
• breaking any lab rule (5 points per rulesee
  handout)
• any noise problem
• eating and/or drinking
• failure to clean your area

Dress Code for Lab

• You must wear pants or a long skirt down to your
  ankles during labs.
• Only closed toe shoes will be acceptable
  footwear. No high heels are allowed.
• Aprons and goggles are required for labs
  involving dissections, harsh chemicals, heat and
  flames. Goggles must be properly worn.

• Contacts are not recommended during dissections
  or when harsh chemicals or flames are being used.
  
• Long hair must be tied back and out of your eyes.
• Loose and baggy clothing are not appropriate.

• Dress code violations will result in a 30 point
  deduction and the student must sit out during
  lab. Students can complete the lab after school
  at the convenience of the teacher.
