• The Cadet Watchkeeping System

Purpose

• The purpose of our proposal is to improve
  Massachusetts Maritime Academys cadet
  watchkeeping system through a series of minor
  changes
• Educational benefits
• Better security on campus
• More effective watches

Grade for Watch

• -Cadets need to keep a log/notebook of their
  activities on watch.
• -If cadets receive a grade for each watch that
  they stand, they will be more inclined to
  complete their watch duties to the best of their
  abilities

Anticipated Arguments

• -Less cadets on watch in engine room
• -No watch for non-licensed majors

The Log Book

• -We propose that each cadet carry a personal log
  detailing name, position, responsibilities,
  completed actions taken during the watch
  (answering the phone, etc.) and answer to the
  question of the day. A separate sheet would be
  filled out each time the cadet has a watch.

CIC Watch Improvements

• -Officers used to hide notes in fire hoses in the
  dorms. Cadets would have to bring the note back
  to CIC to assure that every fire hose was being
  checked.

Watch Check

• -The Regimental Manual states that watch checks
  must be conducted at least every watch change,
  but the RSDO rarely checks.
• -We propose that there is a watch check twice
  during the watch.

Watch Test

• -The watch should be tested for its ability to
  respond to emergencies.
• - We propose that a biweekly test of the watch be
  implemented.

Learning Opportunities for 4/C Cadets

• -Upper class need to be mandated to encourage 4/C
  to trace systems, check tank levels, etc in the
  engine room.
