Title: Cutting Energy Cost

1
Cutting Energy Cost
  • Retrofit Lighting

2
Learning About Your Lighting
  • Things You May Already Know
  • Its necessary for daily operation
  • It impacts productivity and mood
  • It becomes more costly as lighting components age

3
Learning About Your Lighting
  • Stat-Facts
  • Lighting Consumes about 15 of the electricity in
    the United States
  • On average, Lighting accounts for 39 of a
    commercial buildings electricity cost
  • Newer lighting technology can reduce these costs
    by 30 50

4
Learning About Your Lighting
Fluorescent Lighting

Components of Operation
Electrical Feed
Ballast
Fluorescent Tubes
5
Components of Operation
  • Fluorescent Lighting Is generally compatible
with two different types of alternating current
    feeds.
  • 277v
  • 120v
  • note twice the voltage half the amps

Electrical Feed
6
Components of Operation
  • Ballast
  • A magnetic or electronic voltage
    transformer/regulator that acts on the
    fluorescent tubes contents
  • Older Ballasts use electromagnetic coils to
    amplify regulate the AC current
  • Newer ballasts use microprocessors, resistors,
transistors to perform the same function
at about half the energy usage

7
Components of Operation
Fluorescent Tubes
  • Glass tubes of many shapes and sizes that
contain electrodes, a small amount of mercury,
argon gas, and a phosphor powder coating
  • Differences in tubes, aside from shape include
    lighting color, intensity, and wattage
  • These effects are created by changing factors
like the type phosphor coating on the inside of
    the tube

8
Components of Operation
Light Putting Them Together
  • The electrical feed supplies a voltage to the
    ballast
  • The ballast regulates and raises the voltage to
the electrodes in the fluorescent tube
  • The electrodes then create heat which raises the
    energy state of the mercury
  • In returning to its original energy state, the
mercury emits photons of UV light
  • The UV light photons raise the energy state of
the phosphor powder which then emits photons of
    visible light

9
What is A Retrofit?
  • By definition a component or accessory added to
something after it has been manufactured
  • A lighting retrofit then consists of removing
existing lighting components, and replacing them
    with newer technologies that
  • Are less costly to maintain
  • Are More energy efficient
  • Offer a better quality of light

How Does it Work?
  • One of our skilled auditors will take an
    assessment of your lighting system
  • A comprehensive count with and type of fixture
    and type of area covered
  • A measure of power used
  • A before and after estimate of cost and savings

13
How Does it Work?
  • Our production team will convert the lighting at
your facility to accommodate energy efficient
    technologies
  • This process could take just a few weeks to a
couple of months depending on facility size and
    complexity of lighting
  • Typical payback period for a retrofit project is
    around 2-5 years

14
In Conclusion
  • Lighting amounts to 39 of a commercial
    facilitys electricity expense
  • Current technologies can be utilized to reach
goals of 30-50 savings on lighting cost
  • A lighting retrofit is a smart way to adapt these
energy-saving technologies in a short period of
    time
  • The payback period for a retrofit job is
    typically 2-5 years
