CASAGRAS viewing the definitions
Things having identities and virtual
personalities operating in smart spaces using
intelligent interfaces to connect and communicate
within social, environmental and user contexts
- Functionality Identity focus Interconnected
objects having an active role in what might be
called the Future Internet- Seamless
integration A world-wide network of
interconnected objects uniquely addressable,
based on standard communication protocols
Semantic Definitions so often require
qualification and explanation, particularly where
terms like smart, intelligent, and
objects-talking-to-objects are used

CASAGRAS Definition
CASAGRAS Meeting 1st December 2008
Shanghai Internet of Things CASAGRAS
Definition A global network infrastructure,
linking physical and virtual objects through the
exploitation of data capture and communication
capabilities. This infrastructure includes
existing and evolving Internet and network
developments. It will offer specific
object-identification, sensor and connection
capability as the basis for the development of
independent federated services and applications.
These will be characterised by a high degree of
autonomous data capture, transfer event network
connectivity and interoperability.

Elements of functionality
  • Elements of functionality to cover likely
    applications and services requirements include
  • Needs for identification and identification
    management
  • Timing for temporal requirements
  • Location or positioning for spatial requirements
  • Communications capability for data and media
    transfers
  • Response, including display and physical control
    functions
  • Supporting data and interfacing standards and
regulations for harmonised open exploitation of
    object-connected physical world interfacing
interfacing between physical and virtual worlds

Services and the need for a legacy-supporting
identification scheme
The need also for a service-supporting
architecture - enter service oriented
architecture (SOA) and SOA networks

HEADER TEXT HERE
  • SOA principles
  • Services provide reusable functionality with
    well defined interfaces
  • SOA infrastructure enables discovery,
    composition and invocation of services
  • Applications are built using functionality from
    available services
  • Advantages include
  • Agility, scalability, reusability and flexibility
    in distributed heterogeneous environments
  • SOA uses open standard principles and facilitates
loose coupling and plug-ability of new
    interfaces
  • Source A Service Oriented Approach for the
    Future Internet Y Fun Hu

Migrating to the Inclusive Model requires
Attendance to interfacing needs from physical
layer to Internet Attendance to resolver model
for accommodating legacy identification
schemes Attendance to the services support
structure to enable new services and
applications Selection and harmonisation of
physical layer technologies in a controlled
development scheme International cooperation
CASAGRAS 2 a route to the inclusive model and
