Selection criteria for UNMOs
  • Be serving in defence forces, at required rank
  • Be between 25 and 55 years of age
  • Have at least 5 years of commissioned service
  • Meet criteria in Medical Support Manual

The UNMO must have experience/knowledge in
  • Negotiation and conflict resolution
  • Field or troop unit operations
  • Combat-troop training
  • Dismounted and vehicle patrolling
  • Using weaponry, equipment, vehicles
  • Map reading, navigation, GPS
  • Communications, radio operation
  • First aid, stress management

The police candidate must be
  • Serving officer of appropriate rank, or retired
    within past 5 years
  • Minimum 5 years professional experience
  • Between 25 and 62 years of age
  • Competent in mission language (English or
    French)
  • Physically and mentally fit
  • Mature in attitude

The UN police officer should be
  • Resilient under stress
  • Adaptable to field conditions (food,
    accommodation, medical resources)
  • Honest, impartial, self-disciplined
  • Willing to take initiative, lead others

  • Be a competent adviser, mentor, trainer
  • Have good leadership and management skills
  • Feel comfortable in host-country environments
  • Be capable of understanding positions of parties
    in conflict
  • Be competent in impartially investigating and
    reporting incidents
