Title: How can displacement reactions be used on the railways

1
How can displacement reactions be used on the
railways?

2
We normally look at displacement reactions in
the laboratory, where these reactions take place
in a solution. However, these reactions can also
take place if you add a little bit of heat.
When repairing railway tracks, cracks sometimes
have to be repaired by welding them. Iron oxide
and aluminium powder are mixed together and
placed around the crack. Heat, often in the form
of a sparkler, is added, and a fierce reaction
takes place where the aluminium displaces the
iron. This leaves molten iron to fill the crack
and repair the track. It is called a thermit
reaction.
