  • Always report when an alarm is sounding..anytime
    during the day or night.
  • Always evacuate the building(even though its
    like the boy who cried wolf)
  • FD will decide if it is falseor otherwise
  • If someone accidentally pulled the alarmso state

How to pull a fire alarm pull station
  • pull- down barmay or may not have a glass rod
  • Usually located by exits or exits of cubes
    (CKTO)(JTC)
  • Know ahead of time where the pull stations are
    North Hall Fire (11/6/82)
  • Door alarms are a steady tone---fire alarms will
    have a sequence to them

  • False alarm--300 state charge
  • First city offense - 77.40
  • Second city offense 77.40
  • Third over city offense - 89.60
  • Plus 400 restitution
  • Plus 1 year suspension from UW System
  • Interfering (not leaving a room or building
  • 75 state
  • Plus 25 for UW-Police

Report all Fires including those put out
  • FD will respond
  • Usually single engine
  • No need to evacuate? Unless filled with smoke
  • If there is only a smoke smell or odor try to
    decide the odor and report

  • Do not let anyone store items in cabinet

Building Evacuation Procedures
  • Call 9-911
  • Leave area in orderly pattern, dont run..go to
    other building in winter or inclement weather
  • Inform everyone on floor they must leave
  • If areas are not checked, tell Fire Department
    personnel

  • Turn off electrical equipmentif possible
  • Make sure stairway doors are closedalso doors
    between cubes (example CKTO-Smoke Towers)
  • Do not use elevators
  • Keep students 150 from building
  • Meet FD personnel at door
  • Report if there is a fire and where it is located
  • Lead us to area but do not put yourself in danger

Building Evacuation Contt
  • FD personnel will OK when to re-occupy the
    building
  • Some alarms will only sound for a few minutes and
    quit
  • Do not re-enter automatically when the alarm
    stops sounding

How to deal with those who wont leave the room
or building
  • Tell them the alarm is sounding
  • Tell them to leave
  • Tell them there is a fine for not leaving
  • Then leave them there .. Dont fight or argue
    with them
  • Meet the FD or UW-Police at the door
  • UW-Police will remove the person

Fire Inspection
  • Done every six months with some exceptions
  • Check hallways, storage rooms, smoke detectors,
    alarm systems, pull station glasses, door wedges
    on fire doors, extinguisher cabinets, bicycles in
    hallways
  • You should periodically check

How to use extinguishers
  • ABC multipurpose in cabinets and most other areas
  • CO2 in kitchen areas
  • Water in some academic buildings
  • Always have an exitplace yourself between the
    fire and the exit.
