What is Social Software?
2
3
No, seriously now. What is it really?
  • Sharing
  • Creating
  • Making Connections
  • Engaging Patrons
  • Social Software vs. Non-Social Software
  • All of these things and more!

3
4
What we will attempt to cover today
  • Blogs
  • RSS
  • Twitter
  • SMS (Mobile Devices)
  • Wikis
  • Podcasts
  • Skype
  • IM

We will discuss these technologies and then focus
on how or why they fit in with health
organizations

4
5
5
6
In theory, blogs take the complexity out of
creating content for the web
6
7
Most blogs have a comments area to facilitate
feedback and conversation
7
8
Blogs are (usually) organized in reverse
chronological order
8
9
Blog entries are usually short, first-person,
chatty and informal
9
10
How a blog can benefit a healthcare organization
  • Destination for information and community news
  • Responsive to feedback
  • More staff can be involved with the website
  • Including the public in the discussion is
    easier
  • Emergency notifications

10
11
Examples
  • More where this came from http//del.icio.us/gmrt
    echcood/astho2008

11
12
RSS
  • Really Simple Syndication
  • Huh, pretty meaningless to most people
  • Really means put my headlines and summaries on
    someone elses Web page automatically
  • Write once, publish many
  • The benefit of RSS is the aggregation of content
from multiple Web sources in one place

12
13
The Old Way
13
14
The New Way
14
15
How do you find an RSS feed? (and then what do
you do with it?)
  • First you have to find one
  • Search for RSS feeds technorati.com,
    feedster.com, daypop.com, newsisfree.com etc.
  • Use an aggregator to find feeds
  • As you are surfing, keep an eye out for certain
    things

15
16
Using and reading RSS feeds
  • Play around with various services
  • See which one works best for you (and that is
    easy to use!)

16
17
PubMed and RSS
17
18
Alternative ways to find an RSS feed?
  • Use Bloglines or Google Reader to read others
    subscriptions
  • Subscribe to their picks
  • Import their entire subscription into your own

18

20
Whats it good for?
  • Great for regularly-updated material with a set
    format
  • News releases
  • Program updates
  • Recent additions / whats new on a site

website, via the website, SMS, IM, or other
    services like Facebook

  • Use it
  • Loathe it
