  • Study Skills
  • Reading Note Taking

  • Week 3 Notes
  • David OHerlihy

2
Reading Note Taking
  • Lets start off with reading the following passage
write a title that you think summarizes its
    main idea.
  • How did you feel while reading the passage?
  • Did you use any particular strategy to read it?
  • Dont worry if you found that passage hard to
    understand remember, most people do

3
Reading Note Taking
  • Most of the titles people give are very general
many also felt frustrated while reading this
    particular piece.
  • Now, try to read the passage again, yet this time
we will give it the title of Flying a kite
  • With a title to guide you, did you find reading
    the passage an easier experience?

4
Reading Note Taking
  • The main point that this exercise is trying to
get across is that reading passively makes
understanding reading a lot more difficult
    also less interesting
  • As opposed to reading in a passive manner (no
real strategy employed) active readers tend to do
    some of the following
  • paraphrase, interpret, Summarise,
  • Critical thinking, Reflect,
  • Relate ideas together

5
Reading Note Taking
  • Robinson (1961) came up with a strategy which may
help you read more actively. Its called SQ3R
    stands for
  • Survey
  • Question
  • Read
  • Recite
  • Review

6
Survey
  • By looking over or surveying material you will
get a feel of what information is covered how
    it is organised
  • This will entail examining the following
  • Chapter title
  • Outline of chapter headings
  • Introduction
  • Headings subheadings
  • Conclusion
  • summary

7
Survey
  • As we have already seen reading in an active
manner is much more beneficial to our
understanding of material. Therefore, after you
have surveyed your material try an apply
questions to give yourself a focus for reading.
  • E.G Who, where, how, when, what why to the key
    topics headings
  • These questions should act as a set of guidelines
which you will use when reading the material.

8
Reading
  • Now you should find your reading of the material
    clearer, faster, easier to remember
  • Bear in mind when reading that its impossible to
remember every point or idea, so dont even try!
  • What you must do it try to identify the key
concepts or ideas understand what they mean.
Write down notes or highlight the important
points if you feel this will help.

9
Reciting Reviewing
  • By reciting reviewing the material you have
covered it should improve what you remember.
  • Reciting involves thinking through what you have
read talking/writing out the ideas you want to
    remember.
  • Reviewing basically involves going over material
again. If done on a fairly regular basis it will
help to keep ideas relationships fresh in your
    mind.

10
Applying the Strategy
  • As with most strategies it may take more time
initially to get used to using the SQ3R approach.
But as you use it become more comfortable with
this approach it should begin to save you time
  • You might find that one stage in particular is
more useful to your needs. It might be the
survey stage or the review recite stage. There
is nothing wrong with tailoring this approach to
    suit your style.
  • Not all material will suit the SQ3R approach,
material that dont have heading, intro,
conclusions may be more difficult to read

11
Applying the Strategy
  • If this is the case, then you may find it helpful
to write down you own headings
  • Jeopardy Strategy
  • Read the paragraph
  • Summarise/paraphrase it
  • Ask, what question is this information the
    answer to?

12
Note Taking
  • The purpose is to provide you with a written
record of the ideas you thought were important in
    the lecture
  • Written notes serve as an important starting
place for you to relate ideas within your
course, review, think critically, prepare for
    exams, generate ideas
  • Taking lectures notes in itself will keep you
    focussed

13
Note Taking
  • Remember that its impossible to expect that for a
period of 45 minutes you will be expected to note
    down everything that is said.
  • Certain tasks that may help with taking lectures
    notes
  • Before the lecture
  • 1. Always begin lecture notes on separate pages
  • 2. Write the date, lecturers name, subject title
  • 3.
  • 4.
  • 5.

14
Note Taking
  • During the lecture
  • Introduction usually includes summary of what
was covered in previous classes provides an
outline of the current lecture background to
the topic which will be introduced
  • Middle main body of the lecture, you normally
find an outline of the main theorists, evidence
or arguments. Its important to try and think as
you listen, this will help you to question
    understand
  • End usually entails a review of the main
    conclusions important points

15
Note Taking
  • After the lecture
  • You should always do some follow up work
  • Review your notes after every lecture
  • Do it within a few days of each lecture
  • Try to see connections between this lecture
    previous ones
  • Use highlighters to stress the main points
(however, you dont what a page full of colours)

16
Note Taking
  • Write a summary of your notes
  • A short paragraph at the end of your notes, try
to do this as soon as possible
  • Remember to organise your notes/handouts neatly
where you can find them easily.
  • Knowing thats important in a lecture
  • Responding to the cues given by the instructor
  • Ideas that the lecture repeats or spends a long
    time on
  • Ideas written on board or overhead

17
Note Taking
  • Ideas covered in the text or course outline
  • Change in pace, tone, emphasis, volume, body
    language
  • Clear cues this is important
  • Use abbreviations
  • Is greater than e.g. example
  • lt is less than and
  • percent B/e because
  • plus w/ with w/out without

18
Note Taking
  • You may find it useful to use diagrams or drawing
where possible (this might not always be
    practical0
  • Its important that you keep asking yourself
questions. As you already know its difficult to
concentrate for 45 mins, so to keep yourself
focused why not ask yourself What is the main
point here? or How does this relate to what I
    already know?
  • If you lose concentration.

19
Note Taking
  • Do not panic!
  • Listen for keywords to put you back on track
  • Leave blanks you can follow up after the
    lecture
  • Do not give up at any stage of the lecture!
