1
North American Automotive SectorPublic/Private
Partnership
  • The Commission for Environmental Cooperation has
made a commitment to expand partnerships with the
    private sector.
  • Building on earlier endeavors, this partnership
aims to implement activities with the automotive
sector, targeting companies with operations in
Mexico, Canada and the United States
  • Trilateral approval of this project by the
Environmental Ministers was received on June 28,
    2006.
  • Pursuant to the Puebla Declaration and Council
    Resolution 05-06 (Private Sector Involvement),
this effort is to be led by the U.S. Suppliers
    Partnership for the Environment organization,
    Environment Canada, PROFEPA/Semarnat and the
USEPA with support from the CEC Secretariat.
  • The following is an update as of February 2008

  • Canada
  • Environment Canada is actively engaged in the CEC
public/private partnership program with the Auto
    sector.
  • In the Spring of 2007, Environment Canada
launched a pilot project to explore the use of
the U.S Green Suppliers Network approach with the
    Canadian manufacturing supply chain.
  • To date, Environment Canada has completed one
lean and clean assessment with good results.
Three more assessments are in progress and will
    be completed this spring.
  • Exploring opportunities to promote an activity
with Canadian based auto sector manufacturers
similar to the one in Mexico.

  • United States
  • The Green Suppliers Network is progressing well
and is effecting behavioral change within many
industries in the United States. It continues to
serve as a sound template for greening supply
chain activities throughout North America and has
    recently attracted international attention
    through the OECD.
  • The Suppliers Partnership for the Environment
U.S. is accelerating its efforts to develop a
materials assessment strategy which focuses on
chemical use within the Automotive supply chain.
Recently, Subaru, Honda, Nissan and Hyundai/Kia
joined SP members General Motors, Chrysler, Ford
and several of their chemical suppliers in this
effort. The SP is completing this effort in
phases and is on an accelerated schedule.
