Plans Developments for 2007Tourism and
Hospitality Management Department

Brief history
  • The THM program started in 1998
  • Less than 10 students enrolled that time
  • 1st degree component of the program was offered
    last year
  • Now a full degree program leading to Bachelor of
    Tourism and Hospitality Management
  • 1st degree graduation in February 2008

Primary aim/objective of the THM program
  • Develop the local tourism infrastructure in a way
    that is sustainable and environmentally sensitive
  • Create employment opportunities and
  • Help reduce PNGs dependence on foreign
    resources.
  • Graduates of the THM program are trained for
    supervisory and management positions within the
    industry or related industries, or to start small
    viable tourism businesses themselves.

Program structure emphasis
  • The TH Department offers an integrated management
    program. This means that it is a management
    program. The major areas of study are Tourism,
    Hospitality, Business Management, Computing,
    Ethics and Communication, which are integrated in
    all areas of study.
  • Students can exit after a 2-year diploma program.
  • Students are privileged to have work-integrated
    learning, work experience, field visits and
    student/industry presentations as important
    components of the program.

The TH program is recognised by local
international institutions such as
  • PNG Tourism Promotion Authority (PNGTPA)
  • University of Queensland, Australia (UQ)
  • Southern Cross University, Australia (SCU)
  • University of Technology, Sydney (UTS)
  • Adelaide Institute of TAFE, South Australia
  • Comments one of the most balanced programs in
    tourism studies available anywhere in the world

Conditions for quality
  • Academic staff members are qualified.
  • 1 PhD staff
  • More teaching experience

  • Academic staff are employed in one fulltime job
    at DWU to live comfortably and serve students
    needs
  • - Currently no staff is employed in any other job
    than the job required of his/her position at the
    university
  • Presence of adequate physical, electronic
    administrative support
  • - Students have access to physical, electronic
    and administrative support at all times when
    necessary.
  • Academic freedom
  • - Constructive criticism is encouraged and
    students are given more opportunities to
    participate in activities that are worthwhile to
    ensure that there is responsible academic freedom.
