Computer Testing In Oregons Classrooms
  • Oregon is one of the first states to venture into
    high tech testing.
  • As a pilot project Molalla Elementary School, and
twenty seven other schools test drove TESA
    (Technology Enhanced Student Assessment)
  • This year students at 300 schools will take the
states multiple choice benchmark tests on the
    computer

4
Security Features for Computerized Testing
  • TESA provides 2 codes that students must type in
  • Features prevent students from surfing the web
  • Printing the test
  • Can not use reference material present on the
    computer

5
Advantages of TESA
  • Time span of three weeks
  • Constant Availability of the Test
  • Allows students to test a benchmark whenever
    theyre ready
  • Allows students to retest, several times
  • Faster resultsscores are available immediately

6
Attractions of TESA
  • Potential to deliver tests that are computer
    adaptive
  • Adjust the difficulty of questions based on
    students responses
  • Will produce an accurate score the first time

7
Bugs in TESA/Computerized Tests
  • Students may not be able to see the computer
    screen clearly
  • Some computers may display the text in small font
  • Some schools may experience Internet problems
  • These problems can be disruptive

8
Students Perspectives
  • The test was hard to read because I kept losing
    my place, Jessica
  • I thought it was fun, Courtney
  • Working with scratch paper and then going back
to the computer was more time consuming, Ashley
    Williams

9
Teachers Perspectives
  • The whole idea of the computer is more
motivating to the child, Heidi Blakley
  • Thats frustrating to all concerned. Its
disruptive, Jane Vandezande talking about slow
    internet speed
  • Maybe this is a new skill unrelated to reading,
    Vandezande

Chapter 10- Tests
  • Multimedia for Learning
  • Stephen M. Alessi Stanley R. Trollip

11
Before the Test
  • Teacher must decide who has access
  • What kind of questions and how many of them are
    to be tested
  • What is the passing score
  • Time limit
  • Order of presenting the items
  • Always test the test before giving it (p.345)

12
During the Test
  • Make sure there is no cheating
  • Provide easy access to the items
  • Provide a restart option
  • Tell how much time remains
  • Make sure safety barriers and nets are instilled
    (p.349)

13
Types of Testing
  • Multiple choice items, true/false, matching
  • Arranging
  • Open-ended questions
  • Simulations
  • Adaptive Testing
  • P. (353 354)

14
Advantages of Computerized Testing
  • Testing can be individualized
  • The content of the test can be tailored to suit
    individuals
  • Examinees answers can be stored and used to
improve the items in a pool
  • A student can take the test as many times as
    needed (p. 337)

15
Disadvantages
  • If scoring is automated, items must be of a
multiple choice, matching or short answer
  • Use of computer lab may be hard to facilitate
  • Cheating or using other forms of information (p.
    337)

16
Factors to consider
  • Build in user friendliness
  • Maximize user control
  • Install safety barriers and nets (p. 344)
  • Security of the information
  • Privacy of the tests administered (p. 367)
