Title: Status of TRD SMint preparation as of January 2006
1Status of TRD SMint preparationas of January 2006

2The question
What can we achieve until June 2006 SM01 or
SM00.5 ?Can we build a complete Supermoduleor
only parts of it ?
3Official SMint status
Of course we can still build the first SM in
time. But we may have very little (or no) time
to test it !
4Official SMint status
Of course we can still build the first SM in
time. But we may have very little (or no) time
to test it !
5 Now lets be more realistic
6Pros
- we have almost all ROB PCBs for SM01
- 50pc ROB 1A version 2 are being ordered
- ORI transmitter board seems ok
- acceptable noise on fully equipped C0 ROC
- ROB production in FZK now reliable
- Karlsruhe will equip all 228 ROBs for SM01
- equipping of first ROC for SM01 begins now
- IKF gets involved in electronics integration
- SMint activities not affected by plane
- transport and damage of Dubna ROCs
7Cons
- series equipping of ROBs in company is
- delayed by 2 months and did not yet start
- we found 4 bugs on or 7 ROB types
- gt need more ROB pre-series
- SM hull not available before February
- still no cooling on a single ROC
- LV power supplies delivery mid of March
- many (small) components are still to be
- ordered, delivered or produced this month
- all kinds of cables, optical fibers, more
- HV filter boxes, LV power bus bars,
- cable boards
8Conclusions
- we still need to switch to series mode
- we accumulated 6-8 weeks delay on average
- since October 2005 (in only 4 month !)
- we miss our planning by factor 2 in time
- extrapolating for SM integration (June 2)
- gt SM01 will be ready in December 2006
- This is currently a pretty good estimation !
9Outlook
What will happen if we do not install a
Supermodule at CERN in July 2006 ? Does it
really make sense to install an untested SM
? Could our installation timeslot be shifted
due to other constraints within ALICE ?
10 STOP
We need to speed up and get even better organized
!
11Planning status I
- order new preseries only for ROB 1A V2,
- not all 7 types (optimise for cost and time)
- equipped ROBs for layer 4,5 are available
- at the earliest in early April (ROB 1A V2)
- PCB mass production immediately launched,
- once ROB 1A V2 tested ok (charge pump)
- GO for ROB PCB series production delayed
- series equipping company only for V2 ROBs
- we eat into series preparation for SM02
- first ROBs for SM02 series integration
- at IKF available only in June (not April)
12Planning status II
- no change of ROB supplier for layers 2-5
- gt smooth continuation after 2 layer test
- (we win a lot of time and save money
- by staying with FZK ROBs)
- ROB upgrade of stack done in parallel,
- if time allows (max 2 weeks in total)
- timeslot for beamtime 2006 shifted to
- Sep/Oct (after SM01 installation at CERN)
13Planning status III
- SM01 integration to start early Feb
- TMU must get available mid of Feb
- layers 0 and 1 integrated till end of Feb
- 2 layer test done with current LV PS
- By March (hopefully) we will know
- performance of TRD electronics in the SM
- integration time per layer (in manhours)
- Then, we can revise our planning schedule,
- any previous assumption is speculation.
14 Lets roll !!
