Who Are We?

Recycling in Recent Years
  • Traditionally very landfill based
  • Investment in Consolidated Recycling in 1990s
  • Then TWM/packaged high volume solutions
  • Were all very successful

A Word on MRFing
  • Skipaway one of the first in South East to
    introduce MRFing (1994)
  • Still removes 45-50 recyclate
  • Non-recyclables can be used to produce cover

But..
  • High volume producers were main beneficiaries
    from TWMs
  • Cleanliness of card/paper/plastics from
    consolidated MRFing not great, particularly from
    small producer
  • Small producers got left out

So..
  • 2004 Skipaway launched several schemes including
    Mixed Paper Card
  • In association with ReMaDe
  • Other JVs e.g. M-Real, KCC
  • Caters for the kerbside producer

The Scheme
  • Weekly collections
  • Paper in Green Sacks (supplied)
  • Card collected loose or in Bins
  • Discussed, specified tailored to customer
    before rolling out
  • Must be left out on designated day

  • Covers most of Kent - all will be covered by mid
    2006
  • Pay an annual membership fee (70)
  • Collection costs either free or reduced
  • Card Paper collected together

Benefits
  • Established, reliable provider (not another fad
    company)
  • Supported by other services general waste
    other recycling services, including hazardous
    waste
  • Reduces number of waste suppliers (dont have
    to think about it)

  • ISO14001 friendly
  • Cost reduction
  • Quality of separation not critical
  • Can be supported by office recycling bins

    other than TWM)
  • Over 500 tonnes card/paper diverted by these
    scheme members this year
  • Over 50,000 tonnes of recyclables diverted by
    Skipaway each year (from 4000 customer base)
