Title: FARMING PRATICES

1
FARMING PRATICES
  • FERTILIZATION

2
Water from rainfall washes away a lot of mineral
elements from the topsoil (leaching).
Also intensive cropping removes nutrients from
the soil.
  • Crops cannot grow without nutrients so
    fertilization is necessary.

3
Plant growth and development depend on mineral
elements
  • NITROGEN, PHOSPHORUS, POTASSIUM are the most
    important elements.
  • Plants also need small quantities of elements
    (trace elements) iron, sulphur, manganese,
    copper. zinc.

4
Fertilizers are substances added to the soil to
replace nutrients.
  • Organic fertilizers improve the physical and
    biological properties of the soil.
  • Chemical synthetic fertilizers greatly increase
crop yields. However, chemical fertilizers are
    not good for the environment.

5
ORGANIC FERTILIZATION
  • Fermyard manure (dung) is animal waste.
  • Green manure consists in ploughing leguminous
    crops under the soil.
  • Compost is a mixture of leaves, prunings and
    grass mowing residues from gardening.

6
CHEMICAL SYNTHETIC FERTILIZERS are manufactured
by industry. They are available in liquid,
powdery and granular forms.
