Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness

• Dear Parent,
• Your child is embarking upon our next Social
  Studies unit of the year. We will study America
  by learning about the basic principles of our
  republican form of government and a group of
  famous Americans who created and upheld these
  principles.
• We will be covering the following SOLs
• 3.11
• The student will explain the importance of the
  basic principles that from the foundation for a
  republican form of government by
• describing the individual rights of life, liberty
  and the pursuit of happiness and equality under
  the law.
• identifying the contributions of George
  Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln,
  Rosa Parks, Thurgood Marshall, and Martin Luther
  King, Jr.
• recognizing that Veterans Day and Memorial Day
  honor people who have served to protect the
  countrys freedoms
• 3.11
• The student will recognize that Americans are a
  people of diverse ethnic origins, customs, and
  traditions who are united by the basic principles
  of a republican form of government and respect
  for individual rights and freedoms.
• This unit will continue until spring break. The
  unit study guide is attached to this letter. It
  should be LEFT IN YOUR CHILDS TAKE HOME FOLDER.
  We will work on it in school and then your child
  should study the completed sections for a few
  minutes each evening. It is very important to
  review daily!! The test will be Tuesday, April
  3. The online quiz will be available Monday,
  March 26.
• There is a long-range famous Americans report
  assignment on the back of this letter. The
  report is due Wednesday, April 4. The children
  will be tested on all famous Americans covered in
  grades K-3 on the SOL test in May. This report
  is designed to review all famous Americans in a
  fun way.
• Please encourage your child to explore the links
  on the hotlist of Famous Americans on the
  website. Just click on third grade, links,
  social studies, famous Americans, hotlist.

  These are people you studied in Kindergarten,
  First, Second and Third grades.
• Research your American. You may use an
  encyclopedia, a biography, the internet or all
  three.
• Write or type a one page report to present to the
  class
