7Technical Data
Data created during an engineering development
process
- CAD / CAM / CAE files
- PDM / TDM information
- BOMs, Requirements, Reports, Spreadsheets, Lists,
etc. - Many formats
Information stored in TDM/PDM Systems Informatio
n stored in all associated files
General remark At the technical data package
level, file encoding and format is
irrelevant.
8Current Status of Data Exchange
- Many different methods for exchange
- Mail-Boxes
- OFTP Systems
- E-Mail
- Offline / Physical Media / Printouts
- OEMproprietary solutions
- Complex workflow
- Increasing cost, time to market pressures

10The ENGDAT Message
- Contains all information necessary to transmit
- packages of files
- from a sender to a final destination on the
receiver's side (Person, System, Process) - Serves as a "Delivery Note"
- Contains basic Information about
- each file in the package - and the overall
package itself - the sender
- the receiver
- Provides the information in an automatically
processable format - starting with XML

12The ENGDAT Process
- Main Steps
- Request for Data by Company A
- Preparation and Transmission of Data (Company B)
- Collect Data
- Convert Data if necessary
- Build the ENGDAT-Package
- Send the Package
- Receipt and Acknowledgement by Company A
13The ENGDAT Process
14Exchange of PDM Information
Current Status
- Automatic export and import of PDM-information is
currently not applied or only in few cases - PDM-information is maintained manually at least
on the receiver's side (if PDM-information is
exchanged at all) - Manual recreation is error prone and very time
and cost intensive (in case of complex
assembly-structures)

17Exchange of PDM Information
- Benefits
- Automatic import of PDM Information
- saves time
- avoids errors in manual activities (recreation
of the assembly structure) - Savings increase with complexity of exchanged
assemblies - Prerequisites
- Use of STEP AP 214 CC6
- Clear defined mapping between the TDM/PDM systems
involved

20Highlights / Benefits
- One Standard for Exchange of Technical Data
- Internationally valid Interface
- Reliable and secure method for exchange
- All associated information in one package
- Unified, well defined process flow
- Usable by all participating companies
- Independence of internal process structures
- Data are held only inside the participating
companies - Exchange from person or process to
person or process - Exchange of PDM-Information is defined as well
21Savings
- Deployment of this Standard worldwide facilitates
global co-operation and collaboration - The International Standard supports a global,
uniform understanding of the data exchange
process - Both OEMs and Suppliers save time and money
exchanging data via standard methods.
