What are we working on - Globally
  • Produce RDR and now EDR at the end of 2009
  • or 2010 or 2011 depending on who you talk to
  • EDR requirements are not well defined
  • Manage/conduct Global RD plan in units called
    Work Packages. First draft done.
  • Collaboration primarily with ANL and to a lesser
    extent SLAC
  • Small FNAL effort for RDR/EDR.
  • Steve Wolbers (was Patty), Bakul Banerjee,
Margaret Votava, Vince Pavlicek, Mark Bowden,
Bill Haynes, Jim Patrick, Sharon Lackey
  • Weekly telecon meetings.
  • Consumes all FNAL FTEs paid for by the GDE
  • RDR done except
  • for technical notes that expand details
  • WBS type things like complete basis of estimate
  • Placeholder for other things like controls effort
    needed for instrumentation RD
  • Ron/Lucianos trip(s) to DESY and KEK for HOM BPM
    Testing
  • Charlie Briegels ATCA work for ATCA BPMs at NML

3
ATCA
  • Advanced Telecommunications Architecture
  • Emerging Standard for High Availability
    Architectures
  • One of the ILC Controls Challenges. Up time of
    99.999
  • Being really pushed by SLAC as part of the
    architecture for ILC controls.
  • Offers hot swap of boards, redundant power
    supplies and networking
  • Telecommunications gt digital.
  • No commercial analog boards
  • Commercial plug ATCA workshop as part of RT
    conference on Sunday April, 29th.
  • Hardware/software tutorials
  • Talks on User Experience and
  • 80 registration

ILC Controls RD
  • High Availability
  • Evaluating ATCA as a standard outside of
    instrumentation
  • Diagnostic Interface Layer
  • Evaluation of high availability software
    techniques in all layers
  • Standards, standardization, quality assurance
  • Timing/feedback
  • Precision timing and RF phase distribution
  • Extensive reliance on automation and beam based
    feedback
  • Controls system studies
  • Conflict Avoidance
  • Fault detection and recovery
  • Scalability
  • RD needed to configure/control/monitor a
control system as complex as the ILC.
  • Remote operations
  • Provide a framework which is supportive of remote
operations RD such as role based access.

6
ILC Controls Work Packages
  • Encompasses FY08 and FY09 RD Funding
  • Not much. 5.6M in FY08. Includes salaries.
  • another 4M for SCRF, but this is really FNAL
    money
  • Given to ART Global systems leaders on Wednesday.
  • John Carwardine (ANL) and Ray Larsen (SLAC)
  • More than just controls. Includes
    instrumentation, alignment
  • Work Packages 1-2 page description

7
Commercial Break for Glossary
  • SMTF -gt ILCTA -gt SCRF
  • All are Fermilab centric, i.e., no other lab is
    building a facility called ILCTA
  • SMTF Superconducting Module Test Facility.
  • Initially just the work being done at A0
  • ILCTA ILC Test Accelerator
  • Includes all ILC test areas. A0 (prototype of NML
    and 3.9 GHz testing program), VTS_at_IB1, HTS_at_MDB,
    and NML
  • SCRF Superconducting RF
  • Renamed in light of DOE funding request. Didnt
want it to be solely an ILC test facility but
allow for all kinds of accelerator RD.
  • VTS Vertical Test Stand, VTF.
  • Just one for now, more are planned. Need new cryo
    system at IB1
  • HTS Horizontal Test Stand, HTF.
  • Just one for now, more are planned. Will need new
    klystron

8
More Glossary NML/CTF
  • NML SCRF test area with beam
  • DOE Review recommendation was to build a CTF
(cryomodule test facility) with no beam. Similar
    to VTF/HTF, but for cryomodule.
  • FNAL still believes beam area critical.

9
SCRF Requests
  • Controls RD is focused in two areas
  • RD to create stable and robust controls system
    for SCRF RD program
  • RD for ILC Controls
  • DOE request address only the SCRF RD program
  • Want to make ourselves available for ILC Controls
    RD
  • Control system is recognized critical for ILC
    success
  • NML is strong site for controls RD
  • Running with ILC beam parameters
  • Conveniently located near institutions involved
in global controls effort (ANL, FNAL)
  • Close collaborators with others (DESY, SLAC).
  • Not much recommended GDE funding in near term,
    but will come.

10
SCRF Control Goals
  • Provide an operationally stable system for the
automatic procedures needed for cavity and
    cryomodule testing
  • Provide a consistent controls infrastructure for
all the facilities VTS, HTS, NML.
  • VTS controls in the SNS package. Interface to
    common electronic logbook/data management
    systems.
  • Provide an infrastructure that can readily
    integrate components developed at collaborating
    institutions
  • Provide a work area conducive ILC Controls RD
  • These goals are not always compatible.
  • Balance needs to be found

11
SCRF Focus
  • Infrastructure support
  • Core controls system(s) support, development, and
    configuration management including code packaging
    and distribution
  • Controls systems include EPICS, DOOCS and
diagnostic systems such as LabView and MatLab
  • Develop cavity data management system
  • Additional component support including system
    management, electronic logbook, cavity data
    management system
  • Test area specific
  • NML specific development
  • Develop timing and clock system that are required
    for first beam operation
  • Develop interfaces for new components for
    instrumentation and control
  • Develop controls interface for ATCA BPMs
  • Develop/configure NML application software
  • HTS/VTS ongoing support updating processes, and
user interfaces as more experience with the
    cavities is gleaned.

12

Cavity Data Management
  • Tracks all data about the cavity from processing
    through testing
  • Scope creep (explosion). First FNAL only -gt now
worldwide. Cut back to North America.
  • EDMS issue, but has been in controls WBS
  • Team established last summer to evaluate
    alternatives, make recommendations, and develop
    system
  • Peter Kasper (lead), Jerzy Nogiec, Joe Ozelis,
Jamie Blowers, Claude Saunders (ANL), Marc
    Paterno, Janice Nelson (SLAC)
  • Major options
  • DESY system data centric
  • JLAB system process centric
  • Commercial solution - costly
  • Roll our own
  • External requirements review last Friday
  • Went well report expected by Thursday
  • Included DESY and and JLAB
  • Proposal review to come shortly (couple of weeks)

16
Global Infrastructure
  • Establishing EPICS installation layout
  • Epics has its own build system that is different
    than the FNAL/CD standard way.
  • Primarily paths are hardcoded, not determined via
environment variables. This has a large
implication on build and distribution strategies.
  • Proposal next week
  • Naming convention for EPICS variables
  • Proposal in AD Doc database
  • http//beamdocs.fnal.gov/AD-public/DocDB/ShowDocum
    ent
  • Consistent for HINS and ILC
  • Make data transition between DOOCS and EPICS
    easier
  • ILC Official Document database
  • Not well configured yet (IMHO)
  • Documents can only have one topic
  • No topic/subtopic organization for ILCTA
  • Will get summer student to relocate things from
the docdb demo/plone site to here.
  • System Management
  • Connie/Troy helping here (Thanks!)
  • Custom kernels, many behind AD firewall, in
    remote locations, etc.
  • CRL installed and in use

17
VTS
  • Not much to say
  • Controls system in LabView. Provided by JLab as
    part of MOU.
  • Needs to interface to CRL and cavity data
    management system.

HTF/CC2
  • Primarily EPICS, but LLRF in DOOCS
  • Todo list
  • LLRF Controller is SPARC board. Its old and
problematic. Working on replacing it with an X86
    running Linux.
  • Still includes ACNET for RF interface
  • New interlock crates with additional digitizers
    will fix this
  • Want to Alarm/Archive in EPICS
  • Get Doocs2Epics interface running.
  • Upgrade DOOCS Driver with new server (firmware
    has changed)
  • Automation, Automation, Automation
  • Dennis Nicklaus away at LHC for summer May -gt

Overall NML Status
  • Lower priority than other ILCTA areas
    (HTF/VTS/A0)
  • gt suffers in schedule delay because personnel
    often the same.
  • Instrumentation effort has discovered that Ron
(and Luciano) are great at integration.
  • ILCTA controls effort estimated at 12 FTEs. Jan
efforts reports show 3.5 and February 3.1.
  • UofC magnets moved, building cleaned and painted
  • Beam line chalked in on the floor
  • Control room ceiling being retiled, carpeting
scheduled. CPUs about ready to order
  • Building big enough for 1-2 cryomodule (8
    cavities).
  • 1 ILC RF station has 3 cryomodules
  • First arrivals unclear
  • CC2 Move from MDB
  • Photocathode prep and injection system from INFN
    in the fall
  • 1st cryomodule
