The Great Vowel Shift

• Shift affected only long vowels
• with silent e (name, drove, prove),
• with two vowels (sheep, boat, boot, clean, out),
• with stressed open syllables (go, me, to).
• Long vowel sounds moved up one position in the
  mouth.
• Some exceptions exist (bread, blood, find).
