  • What is Kosher food?
  • What is Kashrut?
  • Why do the Jews have food laws?

What does Kosher mean?
  • Kosher means fit or proper
  • From this we get the word KASHRUT which means the
    state of being kosher.
  • Foods that are forbidden are called Treifah, e.g.
    a pig.

FISH
  • Fish is allowed, but only fish with fins and
    scales.
  • Can you think of any examples?
  • E.g. Plaice, cod, herring, haddock, mackerel,
    salmon, tuna, pike.

  • All other seafood is forbidden to Jews.
  • Can you think of any fish that Jews cannot eat?
  • Eels are not Kosher as they have no scales.
  • No shellfish is allowed, e.g. crabs, lobsters,
    prawns, mussels and shrimps, octopus or squid.

  • INSECTS are forbidden apart from those that hop.
  • E.g. grasshoppers or locusts.

POULTRY
  • Most poultry are acceptable apart from birds of
    prey or scavengers.
  • So what poultry can Jews eat?
  • In practice Jews only eat chicken, turkey and
    duck.

  • What about eggs? Kashrut or Treifah?
  • All eggs of permitted birds are kosher.
  • However if the egg contains one spot of blood it
    becomes Treifah.
  • Any birds found to have defective internal organs
    are Treifah.

  • Animals that Jews are allowed to eat are listed
    in Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14.
  • The general rule is only animals that chew the
    cud and have a cloven hoof can be eaten.

PARVE
  • Foods which are neither Kosher or Treifah ane
    called Parev neutral food.
  • Can you think of any food which is parev?
  • E.g. cereals, fruit, nuts, pulses, vegetables
    (provided there are no insects!)

Assessment task
Design either a kosher or Treifah meal on the
plate provided. Draw your chosen foods on the
front. You can do it as a collage if you wish.
Explain on the back of the plate which foods you
have chosen and how your meal is Kosher or
Treifah.
