Spend the Summer in
09 Ski trip to
Montgenvre
Barbados
During the Summer of 2009, we are offering our
pupils the opportunity to travel to
Barbados. The trip is being co-ordinated by an
educational travel company for a ten to twelve
day trip. The programme will include fixtures
with local teams in hockey, netball and
basketball, guided tours, beach games and of
course some time for relaxation. Travel will be
by coach and plane and accommodation in one of
the hotels recommended by the tour company. The
number of staff accompanying the trip depends on
the numbers of pupils registering an interest in
participating. The tour is open to all boys and
girls currently studying in Years 10 to 12 at
Stover. The cost for the tour would be in the
region of 1,200 per pupil plus spending money
and meals. This price includes accommodation,
transport, arrangement of fixtures and day trips.
Day trips may include a guided tour of the
island, unique beach front location water
trampolining, canoeing, snorkelling, a catamaran
cruise, snorkelling with turtles and an off road
land safari. To register your interest or for
more details please contact Miss Bulford on 01626
354505 or email cbulford_at_stover.co.uk
Following the highly successful ski trip last
year, we are organising our next trip to
Montgenèvre in France. Montgenèvre is a
beautiful, high-level resort affectionately known
as the Pearl of the Southern Alps. It offers
excellent skiing facilities set amongst a
traditional stone built village. At 1860m and
covering 145km of piste, it is an ideal resort
for the beginner and intermediate skier. The
resort links into the well-known and extensive
Milky Way ski area, which includes Sauze
dOulx, Sestrière and Clavière to give a total
area of 400 km of piste. The trip will take
place during half term, from 14th February to the
21st February 2009 and is open to all pupils,
Years 6 to 13. To register your interest or for
more details please contact Mr Barter on 01626
354505 or email pbarter_at_stover.co.uk.

Autumn..
Hockey
Spring.
We had another busy term with a large number of
fixtures for both the boys and girls in football,
netball and cross-country. We held our annual
cross country competition at Stover, we were
fortunate to have fine weather after all the
rain. This year over three hundred children
competed from sixteen schools. Whilst we did not
come home victors this year, individuals
performed well. This term we have started golf
at Stover. Our first game in the Independent
Schools Competition was against Millfield School.
Harriet Sansom, Georgia West, Harriet Rogers and
Rory Johnson faced strong opposition. They all
learnt some valuable skills and tactics from
their opposing players. We have since been
invited to a number of golf events. Stover will
be offering an after-school Golf Club which will
be run by our Golf Coach Sally Watkins, who has
just been named as the non-playing Captain of the
England Ladies Golf Squad. Sally will bring a
wealth of experience and is very keen to
introduce golf to all pupils.
We have worked hard to improve performance in our
main sports of hockey and rugby. The senior
girls have improved their skill level
dramatically and won through to the final of the
Area Hockey Tournament. We had successes in the
U14 Devon Hockey trials with both Harriet Sansom
and Harriet Rogers being selected for the county
team. Harriet Sansom was also selected for the
U15 Devon Hockey team, a year young, which is a
great achievement. Victoria Stark has been asked
to train with the U17 Devon Hockey squad.
Tennis was very important this winter,
culminating in our Inter-House tennis competition
with Seymour/Elizabeth House wining the
prestigious Tennis Cup. Our Under 18 Boys Tennis
team have played several matches against other
schools. The team consisted of Joshua Heath,
Luke Sansom, William Doble, Alan Lin and Sky Lin.
Look out in the future for our U18 boys
Basketball fixtures taking place on our new
basketball court.
Rugby
In rugby the boys continue to develop their
skills in what we know will be some testing years
as they establish their teams. Jamie Coyne-Stacey
was once again selected for the South West
Schools Rugby Academy.

Consistent wet whether failed to dampen the
spirits during the summer where our pupils
enjoyed another busy sporting term. We have
continued to achieve good results in between the
showers with particular focus upon athletics,
cricket and rounders. The girls thoroughly
enjoyed their rounders matches and competed
keenly in athletics. The boys played an
increasing number of cricket fixtures and they
have competed in a number of senior school
athletic events for the first time. The boys
have gained valuable knowledge about the
techniques and standards required and they will
be able to use this experience to improve upon
their performances next year.
Stover Pupils were also busy on the trampoline.
Catherine Gower and Emily James were placed 1st
and 3rd respectively at the Super Tramp
Competition in Somerset. Katie James also won
her age group. Nikita Higginson has gained her
British Gymnastics Trampoline Coaching Award.
Well done Nikita. Stover was also represented at
the South West Schools Trampolining Competition.
In the U15 section Catherine Gower came 6th,
Megan Higginson 8th, Alex Case 9th, the team came
3rd overall and the U13 team came 4th.
Congratulations to all our pupils, what a great
effort!

Top Performers
In cricket notable achievements were made by the
U11 team who reached the finals of the Lord
Taveners Hardball Cricket Competition at Exeter
University. Samuel Wyatt-Haines in particular
has enjoyed an outstanding cricket season. He
took a hat-trick against Cuthbert Mayne U12 and
scored 60 not out vs Plymouth College, 65 not out
vs St Peters School, 76 not out vs Kelly College
and five wickets for 0 runs against Kelly
College. The final accolade was to be
appointed the Captain of the Devon County side.
Well done Samuel on an outstanding season.
Congratulations to the following pupils for
outstanding achievement in effort throughout this
year.

Golf
Harriet Rogers, Georgia West and Harriet Sansom
travelled to Sunningdale to play in the Girls
Inter-school Challenge Bowl. All played well,
with Harriet Rogers just missing out on a
prize. They also travelled to Millfield with
Rory Johnson to play in their Prep School Golf
Day. Rory was placed 9th. Rory went on to play
at The Shire in a ISGA final competition which
was a fantastic experience for him. Luke Sansom
and Rory Johnson, alongside our Golf coach Sally
Watkins, travelled to The Shire in London to
compete in the Independent Schools Golf
Association competition and came 8th against some
very strong competition. Sally Watkins was also
victorious in the teachers competition.

Stovers National Champion
Colours
The girls have demonstrated sound skills and
flair in particular at U13, U15 and U18 level.
However these teams have had their downfalls also
and when facing tough opposition have been
valiant in defeat! We entered the Area
competitions and just missed selection for the
National Schools Competition. Megan Higginson has
been selected to represent the school in the U14
Devon Satellite Academy for East Devon.
Stover School pupils have again achieved major
success in the athletics field. 9 Stover pupils
qualified for the National Prep Schools Athletics
Final at Alexander Stadium, Birmingham. Megan
Higginson (Newton Abbot) aged 13 for High Jump
and Long Jump, Harriet Sansom (Ipplepen) aged 13
for Javelin, Alice Blower (Liverton) aged 13 for
Shot, Harriet Rogers (Chudleigh) aged 13 for
Discus, Camilla Laing-Tate (Newton Abbot) aged 13
for 1500m, Holly Sames (Salcombe) aged 11 for 75m
Hurdles, Kate 0'Hanlon (Whimple) aged 11 for 800m
and Long Jump, Samuel Wyatt-Haines (Chudleigh)
aged 11 for Shot and Thomas Simmons
(Abbotskerswell) aged 11 for High Jump. In the
last 3 years Stover School has come away with a
National Champion at this Athletic Final.
Following in previous Stover pupils' footsteps
Megan Higginson won the final of the U13 High
Jump with a fantastic personal best of 1.52m.
All the other Stover pupils came within the top
10 in their event and all achieved personal bests
on the day.  These results made this a very
exciting day for Stover and a fantastic end to a
very successful season.
