  • Literature that came with your compass is good
    reference material.

    the State free.

Declination Adjustment
  • Why is Declination Adjustment important?
  • For every 3000 you travel you will be off by 50
    for each degree of declination.
  • So 88 for every mile

9
Declination Adjustment
  • Tip for remembering when to add or subtract
  • Declination West Compass Best
  • Anything is better when added too
  • Declination East Compass Least
  • Least - subtract

10
Declination Adjustment
  • EXERCISE Adjust your compass for the declination
    on your maps.

11
Laying out your route
  • Find and mark your orienteering points on your
    map.
  • Verify your orienteering points
  • Use a second person to verify
  • Choose and Mark your milestone points
  • The points you will use to verify your position
    along the way.
  • Measure the distance between your milestone points

12
Laying out your route
  • Make note of any obvious features (natural or
manmade) on the opposite shore of your
    destination.
  • Mark them on your map and determine the bearing
    to that feature.

13
Laying out your route
  • EXERCISE Complete the steps to lay out your
    route with your maps.

14
Paddle Pace
  • When you start your paddle make note of the time.
  • Use your milestones to determine how fast youre
paddling to estimate time of arrival at each CP
    or Orienteering Point.

15
Zeroing in on the target
  • As you get close to your destination look for
your features and take a quick bearing.

16
Lessons Learned
  • You can run much faster than you can paddle.
  • You can use the bearing method to locate a
control point, or desired destination near water
    when on foot or bicycle.
  • Examples locating a side trail or specific point
on the shoreline to shoot your next bearing from

17
Lessons Learned
  • Water proof your maps. Dont rely on the map
    case.
  • Attach your map case to somethingperhaps
    yourself.
  • Attach your passport to something.

18
Cross Bearings
  • Underwater orienteering points
  • You need two features to shoot a bearing from so
you can have intersecting lines to locate your
    control point.

19
Cross Bearings
  • Exercise insert here

Paddling Tips
  • Paddler Placement
  • The rear paddler must be able to steer without a
    lot of drag paddling.
  • Works well to have the navigator in the front.
  • If you start to tippaddle harder and lean into
    the obstacle. Paddle, Paddle, Paddle
  • Practice with your partner(s) to find out what
    works for you.
  • Kayak paddles vs. canoe paddles?
  • Have a plan for how youre going to navigate and
    DONT FOLLOW OTHER PEOPLE!
