• Term was coined by Duke University researcher J.
  B. Rhine
• Sometimes referred to as the Sixth Sense

• Clairvoyance the awareness of people, objects or
  events without the help of the 5 known senses

• First statistical study of ESP involved card
  guessing
• Was conducted by Ina Jephson in the 1920s
• G.N.M. Tyrrell used automated target-selection
  and data-recording to guess the location of a
  future point of light.

• A discipline that seeks to demonstrate the
  existence and causes of psychic abilities and
  life after death using the scientific method
• Parapsychology Association says certain types of
  events such as psychokinesis, telepathy, and
  precognition are well established.

• In the National Academy of Sciences, 96
  described themselves as skeptical of ESP
• 2 believed in parapsychology, 10 felt that
  parapsychological research should be encouraged
• A scientific methodology that shows statistically
  significant evidence for ESP with nearly 100
  consistency has not been discovered
• Failures assign all sorts of reason for failure
  during their tests, such as the negative energy
  of the skeptic is throwing them off

Ganzfeld Experiment

• German for Entire field
• Technique used in parapsychology to test people
  for ESP
• The receiver sits in a room in a comfortable
  chair with halved ping-pong balls over their eyes
  while having a red light shone on them
• Also wears a set of headphones through white or
  pink noise (static) is played

• The receiver is kept in a mild sense of sensory
  deprivation for 30 minutes
• The sender then observes a randomly chosen target
  and sends this information to the receiver
• The receiver speaks out loud describing what they
  can see which is then recorded
• Then the receiver is taken out of the room and
  given a set of 2 possible targets and is to pick
  the one that most resembles what they saw
• expected overall hit rate of 25
