1st Crusade

• Urban the II starts first Crusade in 1095
• first Crusade starts shortly after this
• Many Muslims get killed in the Ruthless
• War for the Holy city of Jerusalem
• -At the siege of Jerusalem Muslim
• Population got Massacred including children and
  some women

About Crusades in total

• Crusades were started when the Pope called to
  arms
  
• This often happened after non Christians invaded
  Christian countries
  
• AS a reward the Pope offered to forgive all the
  sins the knights had committed in their live

• Was started by Eugene III
• Started because of the fall of the county Edessa
  
  
• This had been the first of the Crusaders
  Counties after the firs crusade
  
• And again many Muslims and Crusaders Died
  because of their religion

Where did all this happen ?????

• - Some people think Crusades only happened in
  Turkey or Israel but in fact they also happened
  in countries like
  
• Spain and Portugal
• Southern France
• Baltic areas ( mostly German Christian Knights
  fighting )
  
• And Against Mongols attacking Russia and
  Lithuania

Were did the knights come from ??

• from France
• In this time Spain was in the hand of Saracens
  .they had something that was largely unknown in
  that time Horsemen
  
• These made short work of the slow French foot
  soldiers and France paid heavy losses
  
• As a result the Frenchman Karl Martell copied the
  Idea of Warriors on horses and Started an army of
  Heavily armored French knights .
  
• These finally had enough hitting power to drive
  of the Saracens

Weapons

• -As Knights were noble warriors they needed
  Weapons
  
• -Knights were Warriors on horses and thus had
  lots of weapons they could use

• a relatively new invention.
• It allowed the warrior fighting with the flail to
  hit enemies with a shield as the chain just bent
  over the shield

-the horseman's favorite -had a short shaft so it
was easier to swing from horseback

• -mainly used by squires.
• had a higher penetrating power then a normal bow.
  
  
• disadvantage that it took way longer to reload
  then a bow e.g. A good archer could fire about
  20-25 arrows per minute , a good crossbowman only
  1-2

-Most commonly used -a good sword could cost up
to 2 cows
-The lance a weapon which was used from
horseback - it allowed you to pierce enemies fro
m horseback

Everyday life

• 1.If you confessed , someone from the church had
  to sanctify it.
  
• 2.But it was very
• expensive . Thats why
• farmers
• Fought in the War.
• 3. When farmer went to fight in the war they
  didnt have to get a sanctify from a priest

?? How did they live ??

• Lot of work from dawn to dusk
• -had to give 1/10 of his harvest to the church.
• -When the kids turn 5 they started working to.

Witch

• If you betrayed your husband ,you would have to
  carry heavy consequences as you were not allowed
  to do so .
  
• if you didnt listen to the Church ,everybody
• Would call you witch too.
• Many witches were burnt as the church thought
  that the flames would clean you from the evil
  spirit

• The people in the middle age were very
  superstitious.
  
• They thought that the right Religion was
  Christianity but there were also different
  religions.
