What is a gene? Our DNA is divided into distinct
regions know as genes. An organisms genes
determine its characteristics. What is gene
expression? For a gene to exert an effect on the
structure of an organism it needs to be
expressed or activated. When activated a gene
expresses a protein which carries out a specific
function Why Study Gene Expression? The study of
Gene Expression helps us to assign functions to
each gene.
Increase temperature
Condition 1 normal Condition 2 high
temperature Gene A not expressed Gene A
expressed -Protein A not present -Protein A
present Preliminary Conclusion Possibility
that Gene A involved in protection of cell at
high temperatures stabilisation of membrane?
Further investigation warranted.

Microarray Gene Analysis Technology
Conditions
Using Microarrays many genes can be observed
simultaneously. This experiment aids in
discovery of gene function and gene functional
modules (functionally related genes) .
This relationships can be further supported by
extending the number of conditions over which the
genes are observed.
The similarity of correlation may be expressed
using Pearsons Correlation Function. Identificati
on of gene functional modules may be achieved
using standard cluster analyses techniques such
as K-means.
