PEMDAS
  • Pemdas means parenthesis, exponents, multiplying,
    dividing, adding, and subtracting.
  • Another way to say PEMDAS is Please Excuse My
    Dear Aunt Sally.
  • PEMDAS is in order from Parenthesis to
    Subtracting.

Parenthesis
  • Parenthesis
  • First, We have to look for the first step in the
    problem, which is parenthesis,
  • Next, We subtract the numbers that are in the
    parenthesis.
  • Example
  • 9 - 5 (8 - 3) x 2 6 - 34
  • 9 - 5 5 x 2 6 - 34

Exponents
  • Exponents mean the number times the base is being
    multiplied.
  • When you are doing exponents, you are multiplying
    the number by itself to the number that is the
    exponent.
  • Ex 24    2 x 2 x 2 x 2    4 x 4    16

Multiplying
  • When you multiply, you have to multiply a number
    times a number.
  • When you are done doing that, you will get the
    product.
  • EX 6 x 7 42

Dividing
  • Dividing is the operation of determining how
    many times one quantity is contained in another
    the inverse of multiplication.
  • Ex 4 8 2

Adding
  • Adding is when you are putting two numbers
    together to get a number larger than those two
    numbers.
  • Ex 16 85 101

Subtracting
  • Subtracting is when you take two numbers and find
    the difference between two numbers.
  • Ex 60 30 30
