Is this true? Does the church oppress and
restrict females?
5
Looking into the Bible

6
1 Timothy 211-15 A woman should learn in
quietness and full submission. I do not permit a
woman to teach or to have authority over a man
she must be silent. For Adam was formed first,
then Eve. And Adam was not the one deceived it
was the woman who was deceived and became a
sinner. But women will be saved through
childbearing.
7
1 Corinthians 1434-3 Women should remain
silent in the churches. They are not allowed to
speak, but must be in submission, as the Law
says. If they want to inquire about something,
they should ask their own husbands at home for
it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the
church.
8
What sounds like crazy verses at first reading
can be looked at in a cultural context to have it
make more sense
9
Two primary ways these (and other verses) are
interpreted 1) Complementarian view - believes
that women are gifted in many. many ways, but
their function in a church is limited to where
they cannot have authority over men in such roles
as elders, pastor, preaching.
10
Two primary ways these (and other verses) are
interpreted 2) Egalitarian view - believes that
women are able to teach and be pastors, elders in
churches for several which are good to be
familiar with.
11
Looking at these passages through the strengths
and weakness of both viewpoints
12
How did Jesus view women?

13
Praise be to God that He has not created me a
Gentile (a non-Jew)! Praise be to God that he has
not created me a woman! Praise be to God that he
has not created me an ignoramus! - Menahot 43b
14
Josephus, the first century Jewish historian,
wrote The woman.is in all things inferior to
the man.
15
Four equalities are ascribed to women they are
gluttonous, eavesdroppers, lazy and jealous. -
Talmud
16
  • John 4 The Samaritan Woman
  • She was Samaritan
  • She had multiple men she was with and not
    married
  • She was the one first discovered Jesus identity

17
- She was the first evangelist to tell others
both men and woman about Jesus

18
Jesus had female disciples disciple means
learner of a specific teacher Go make
disciples He didnt say only male ones.

19
Luke 81-3 After this, Jesus traveled about
from one town and village to another, proclaiming
the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve
were with him, and also some women who had been
cured of evil spirits and diseases Mary (called
Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out
Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod's
household Susanna and many others. These women
were helping to support them out of their own
means.
20
Jesus was culturally sensitive, and perhaps also
was demonstrating the 12 represented the 12
Tribes of Israel. None of the 12 disciples were
Gentiles (non-Jews), slaves, peasants, or
non-Galileans. If we only limit disciples to
this standard or group, we would be in great
trouble.
21
  • Jesus taught women with Mary sitting at his feet.
    (Luke 1038-42)
  • The first group to see the resurrected Jesus were
    females (Matthew 28 Mark 16)

22
Looking throughout the Bible we see that women
were in significant leadership roles

23
  • Female Prophets
  • In Old Testament times, when they heard the word
prophet it would be equivalent to what we think
of culturally today with the word pastor or
minister. Prophets were declaring Gods Word to
others. Female prophets (prophetess) in the
    Bible included
  • Miriam - Exodus 1520 Anna Luke 236
  • Deborah - Judges 44
  • Huldah 2 Kings 22 14 2 Chron. 3422
  • Philips four daughters Acts 219

24
  • Deborah the Judge
  • Before Kings were established in Israel, it was
Judges who were appointed to lead and have
authority over the people of Israel.
  • Deborah was a female Judge (Judges 4)

25
Apostle? An apostle was someone who God gave
authority and used to break new ground for the
Kingdom. The 12 Disciples were seen as
apostles. Romans 16 7 Greet Andronicus and
Junia, my fellow Jews who have been in prison
with me. They are outstanding among the apostles,
and they were in Christ before I was.
26
The name in Greek is Jounian was originally
seen as a female name and translated as Junia.
Early church fathes such as Origen, Jerome,
Aberlard and others translated the name as
female. But as there arose male leaders who did
not want females to be seen in this light they
translated it as Junias (male). Scholarship has
corrected this, but it then creates a problem for
those who feel only males should be apostles.
27
Female leaders in the church Priscilla and
Aquilla Acts 1824-26 Apollos is taught by
Priscilla and Aquilla. Almost every time you see
Priscilla and Aquilla mentioned, Priscillas name
is first. In that culture it would mean that she
was seen as the lead in what they were
participating in. Paul calls them both
fellow-workers equally, not distinguishing them.
28
Romans 161-2 Phoebe represented Paul and
carried his letter to Rome. Phoebe was a house
church leader.
29
The Gifts of the Spirit not divided into male or
female gifts Acts 2 The Holy Spirit was given
to both male and females in 1 Corinthians 12
and anywhere else gifts are mentioned including
teaching, pastoring, leading etc. there is no
instruction that only males or only females get
certain gifts. will get those gifts.
30
Galatians 328 There is neither Jew nor
Gentile, neither slave nor free, neither male nor
female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
31
When you look through the whole of the Bible you
will find that there are good reasons why people
hold differing viewpoints on this. But no matter
what viewpoint we have (egalitarian or
complementarian), females can still be honored
and serving in the giftedness that God gave them
in a healthy way.
32
How this impacts our individual lives and
attitudes and what we do as a church?
