shop. This was unusual because the store was not
near the beach. He describes the appearance of
    the young women.

the way the ladies were dressed, as the girls
walked past other customers the other customers

store, and the story is told through his view.

thought of a nineteen year old male.

  • Sammy goes from infringing on the young girls
    rights, by visually molesting them.
  • By the end of the story he is the person standing
    up for their rights.

8
Themes/Logic
  • Since the grocery store can resemble the world,
as the girls enter into the store, they are
automatically being looked at by the rest of the
    world.
  • Then as the Manager approaches them and tells
them their outfits are not socially acceptable
    for the store setting.
  • As Sammy quits his job, his becomes an outsider
because he does not believe in what is socially
    acceptable.

9
Symbol
  • Grocery Store represents the world.
  • Queenie is used as the leader of the three
girls hence the alpha-female. She also represents
the dominance women have over young men.
  • Lengel represents the strict socially acceptable
view of the world during that time period.
  • He refers to the customers as sheep.

10
Allusion
  • At the end of the Story a Ford Falcon is mention,
this gives the time period of the story since the
Falcon is a post 1950s car.
  • Sammy make a reference to 1990 being in the far
    future.
  • He also make a reference to Boston stores
becoming Russian stores. This is a definite sign
that is during the Cold War.
  • The grocery store is a reference to the outside
    world.

11
Authors Goal
  • The authors goal is to make people realize why
the social views of the time were seemingly
    conservative based.
  • As well as to show that an ordinary person can
stand up for somebody else's rights, eventually
    changing the accepted social views.

12
Personal Thoughts and Views
  • Since this book is hard to understand because it
seems basic and theres not any obvious hidden
clues to what it is about.
  • The story was a representation of how people in
Russia were suppress to thinking a certain way
and to step away from it was to be a failure.
